ahh this is interesting.. ever since I started putting choons in my rekid box I have always separated my tracks into 4 groups.. progressive, melodic, dark and uplifting.

see pic here: (from RUSH at Icebox)

I guess I could classiffy most of my dark stuff as tech trance or techno with a harsher melody than melodic trance.

Igor S - Boomerang
Tiesto Traffic / Love Comes Again
Innergy - Crashtest Comet
Ferry Corsten - Punk/Right Of Way
Joop - Sonzus
Rankdy Katana - One Solid Wave

That sort of stuff is what I call dark..

but evern uplifting can be dark.. such as Urban Shakedown... it sounds 'dark' to me.

I wouldn't call dark trance a genre, but more a description of what tech trance sounds like.

I don't know there are so many new "sub-genres" coming out all the time it's hard to keep up. I guess you could call anything with an eerie twisted synth line as dark trance? Unless there's some bpm requirement for dark trance which I'm not aware of..

edit: "Dark" tracks should also be in a minor key I assume.
Spang
Stuff i find dark.

Green Martian - Industry, wizardry
Pale X - hibernation etc
Ron van den beuken stuff
Solar Factor- No return
Dirty bass tracks
Marco V- Atlanta 02.02.2002

Usually stuff you may end a trance set with to vary it up a little.
tachyon
less with synths, more with driving drum loops, melodies has a 'heavy' feel sometimes, not as much happy thoughts...

goa - psy has many of those 'dark elements' imo.. :P

Dark Trance;

Brooding, never really takes off, doesnt peak (rarely does), often with a slight "echoie" bassline, rythmic.

You get the feeling that if u close your eyes u connect deeper with the DJ.

Apparently it's the same feeling people get from "Deep house", (though i cant say i have managed the connection to deep house as of yet)

From what i read of this thread i didnt really agree with them, I think you should listen to some remixes by Markus Schulz such as...

Oceanlab - Satellite (Markus Schulz Coldharbour Remix)
Mark Otten - Tranquility (Markus Schulz Coldharbour Remix)
Airwave - Lady Blue (Markus Schulz Coldharbour Remix)
Markus Schulz presents Elevation - Somewhere [Clear Blue](Markus Schulz Coldharbour Remix)

Strangly enough you can find these on Markus Schulz latest album "Coldharbour"

Listen to these songs, and the originals, and you will here the difference between Trance and DARK Trance

If anyone wants to disagree fine, this is my opinion and the one held by Armin Van Buuren, guess he knows a thing or two about trance :D
