The Mattress Thread

I've recently been shopping for a new mattress. I wanted to do some research beforehand but found there was surprisingly little common sense info from us, the buyers, on the net - very few reviews. This may be because a mattress is something a person buys once a decade or so - still surprising the lack of info considering the percentage of our total life time we will spend lying on one.

Apparently mattress companies are notorious for making it difficult to compare mattresses through confusing labelling. There also seems to be no universal system available that would allow a person to find the right mattress for themselves quickly based on their weight, height, muscle density, whatever.

I bought a mattress eventually, but am not happy with it. It's a Sleepmaker Spinal Care - it's approved by the Spinal Alignment Committee Australia. It makes me wonder if Sleepmaker sponsors this group in exchange for their endorsing it. I wonder if this group is actually even legit.

The mattress is comfortable enough I guess, but not as good as my last mattress, which, before I sold it, I forgot to take note of the brand name. I think it was a Sealy Posturepedic. It seemed to change shape to fit your body when you lay down on it, giving support in all the right places no matter what position you were sleeping in.

I think I will be returning the Sleepmaker. It was a lot cheaper than a Sealy I spied in another store, which was great, and I thought it was comfortable enough when I tried it out, but now that I've slept on it for a few weeks I'm noticing where it's lacking compared to my old body conforming mattress. You get what you paid for I guess.

The Sleepmaker Spinal Care Firm was AUS$400 (queen size). I remember trying out a Sealy Orthozone at AU$590 (queen size) which did that body conforming thing. I will try that one out again I think.

If anyone has any info on mattresses put it in here. Any back pain horror stories from supposed quality mattress companies.

Btw, I'm about 6 ft, thin-ish (I used to be anyway) muscular build. I go for a firm mattress, but now that I've slept on this Sleepmaker firm I'm thinking firm may be a little too hard. Dunno really; the search for comfort continues...

Disclaimer: it's possible this has very little to do with trance :).

Whatever you do just don't get one of those gay air beds that you see the commercials for all the time. I'm not talking about the cheap Aerobeds. I'm talking about the ones that each user has their own controls and in the commercial, you see them pressing them and they go up and down. Thats such bull. About 4 years ago, I must have been high, I ordered their top of the line, kingsize bed. It was $2880 bucks. I know, I know... It was the biggest piece of I've ever seen. I could hardly sleep on it, (probably due in part to the fact that I couldn't sleep over how much it cost me), and the controls were the lamest piles of marketing BS I've ever come across. Luckily, it had a 90 day return policy so I packed the giant ass thing up and shipped it back at my cost though. The bastard cost 250 bucks to ship back. I went on to buy a nice bowling ball bed for 600 bucks and I've slept fine ever since.

shopping for a mattress is a pain.
I pay no attention to the labels, and just went to a mattress store. From waht I could tell there is no exact measurement of firm/softness
but just ask the employee for the type of bed you want.

Personally I like a frim bed, with a big pillowtop. But really, its all personal preference. Some like soft like foam, others hard like a rock.

Mattresses are not cheap at stores. They run from 400-3 to 4K

My grandmother had a mattress that she bought for a guest room that my grandparents had, no one slept on it in all the years they had it, so she just gave it to me and scrapped the guest room, great mattress
