Scratching howto?

So after a year and a half, i finally mastered my beatmatching, learned my ways with the equalizer, understood the basics of track selection, experimented with FX and i've finally educated my hear so that i can key tunes with a piano (for harmonic mixing purposes) :cool:
It's time to develop a new skill: scratching!
I've read alot about it, different types of scratch, how to do it, etc and i find most useful some scratching tutorial videos in www.futureproducers.com . However, this is incredibly difficult, so i guess it would be better for me if i started to scratch with some hiphop and then move on to house/trance/techno.
I really want to develop some turntablist moves, so what can you tell me about good hiphop scratching records and techniques?

| im sure someone will be able to help u out, but i really think ur severely on the wrong website.... i mean u constantly see oakenfold crabbin' on his mp2016 hahah. im really tryin to figure out how the hell u planned on applying scratching to trance, cuz ur talkin about it like its a regular occurence within the genre... i know however that theres avis of qbert showing and describing all the basic scratches if u can find them but that shouldnt be a problem. also im curious as to wat ur set up is, cuz if ur trying to attempt to do this on like a djm600 u better put on goggles cuz theres gonna be vca sliders and crossfaders flying all over ur room.. i think thats potentially ur biggest problem is set up, cuz to get the best out of either dance music or hip hop, ur better off with 2 completely different set ups.... good luck either way ur efforts applauded |

| wait sorry, i got stuck on when u said trance and scratching in the same sentence and realized i didnt quite read everything u said... i checked that futureproducers site, those vids seem cool, i dont think someone trying to describe techniques would be better than that |

he just wants to learn some turntablism. so do i, heh. but he wouldn't necesarily have to have a hip hop oriented mixer in order to incorporate a few turntablist tricks into his sets. he'd just need to adapt. look at Max Graham, he's been doing it lately. so has Dave Seaman, and need i not mention my favorite; James Zabiela. i've seen all 3 of them scratch on a pair of Mk2's, CDJ1000s and a DJM-500 at one of my local clubs. Zabiela is plain overwhelming, so i wouldn't really expect anyone to do it the way he does, but Graham was quite interesting and keeping it simplistic.
instead of just cueing a record, and mixing it in, he would pitch it, and then pull the volume fader up. he would scratch it like a maniac for a phrase or two, then let go of the vinyl, and it'd be beatmatched. was very cool to watch.
then we have Seaman, who seemed to want to experiment that night. he was hitting it on the CDJ-1000s. wasn't really that impressive. i hear he was quite drunk, amongst other things :p |

| see i think of everything in extremes, so when he said that, im thinking of paul van dyk entering the dmc competition putting little circle stickers on his records and beat juggling lol |

| i'd love to learn how to scratch as it's always impressive to watch, but I have terrible co-ordination so it would take me so long to learn. |

I am in no way insinuating that Zabiela is not an excellent DJ, but he uses the Pioneer effects unit, not sure what it is exactly called, during his "scratch madness sessions" (see video of him and Sasha in sweden). Using the effects unit features makes it sound like he is cutting the record up at an almost impossible rate. Just another cool way to harness technology.

true, but what i was referring to was the way he implements his scratching (scratches, samples, scratches the sample, samples again, scratches track, loops, scratches loop, and adds effects on top of it)
he is basically a technology turntablist. |

| if you want to check out true turntablists and you don't mind a litle good hip hop, check out the x-ecutioners... they have a wicked dvd... those guys have the turntable skills of oakey, tiesto, sasha, digweed, etc put together |

I don't scratch when i spin trance. It just doesnt go together for me. What works though are cuts/mutes. Using the Line/Phono switches to cut, or the upfaders, or the xfader, etc..
Practise makes perfect. |

| yea but usin fx to cut up a record and callin hima technology scratchist (new cool word lol) is kinda like callin someone that uses auto bpms a technology beat matcher kind of isnt it? |
