I bet Patticus read "harmonic mixing 101" at the DJ University;)
You only find tracks that match SO WELL every so often...congratulations:D...this is a great synergy. Now I don't know about harmonics, but I would bet 10$ that these are in the same key or one is the dominant / sub-dominant.
Very very nice:) I'd mix this one again and again... |

thanks dudes...
yes i knew they're in the same key... that's why i tried it out.
i discovered this awhile ago.... quite proud of this, hehe
thats why im always hyping the "crazy transitions" like these, and hopefully someone will synergize these two tracks which fit together like puzzle pieces... hehe :D
thanx again to SF for helping me rip this long-overdue transition! |

so how do you figure out the key?????
I know you produce, too. So do you just listen to the track and KNOW it's E major or whatever?
I want to be able to do this SO bad! Then you could make whole sets like that. Everytime you buy a new record you'd just have to write the key on it and put it in your bag along with the others in that key. That would make mixing so much better, but as I said I don't know about harmonics and don't have the time to learn it right now. Maybe next year... |

i actually dont produce, i just tinker... and hope to produce in the future as a professional :D
but the key which is f minor... for the base.. i just get from the 12 years of intensive classical music training, your ear automatically picks it up.
and yes i tried that for awhile, playing a bunch of tracks in the same key, like minimalistix - struggle for pleasure is also same key
but that doesnt guarantee synergizing... just seems to make smoother, sometimes even *extend* the track
if you looke at pvd's older stuff, he really knows how to do this well at times. like from dj hitch hiker - cabal into infernal machine - realistic. it really sounds like a part 1 and 2 of one song. hope that helps for now
i haven't bothered writing the keys on my records, it might be useful, but a set all in the same key would get tiresome for sure |

nice... but don't you need 2 songs in order to do a transition? ;) ;)
Good job pat yourself on the back! (<---heheh, a funny)
i wish i could "mix" like that

Absolutely quality mixing, two songs that makes a perfect match.
I really think that the most important thing in mixing is that songs are in the same key. Im no DJ, but Ive tried some mixing and first thing I did was to figure out the song keys. After that everything is much easier. Of course it's not always this simple, some songs just doesnt fit together if even are in same key.
I quess its easier for ppl who have musical background, like Pat :). |

Why I came up with writing it on your records is this:
HEY! It's not showing the image in my post??? I used the IMG button and it says [ img ] and [ /img ] before and after the link...what's up with that:conf:?
I know that a whole set in the same key would be tiresome, but there are other ways to use the keys when you know them (which I DON'T! and I'm so jealous that you can do that BY EAR!!!:))
This scale above has a number for every key.
So in our example it is F minor, makes it "4A". What this scale does is give you possible harmonic matches. Every field that touches "4A" is a key that would match the F minor....this is great for mixing!!!
You know in advance that records with keys from the fields 4B, 5A, 5B, 2A and 2B would be harmonically correct:). Now that wouldn't be tiresome, he?
I don't know enough about this but going from one key to it's perfect fourth or fifth is supposed to have great uplifting effects...I wish I knew how to figure out the keys...gives so MANY possibilites.
And I'm aware that they don't always go together as well as in your clip, but they are ALWAYS better than going from 4A to 10B. |

wow, great chart djdawn! ive seen that somewhere before... long time ago.. it really does help.
i guess from a musical standpoint it makes sense, a minor key will blend with a major key one minor third higher than original key.
e.g. c minor w/ e major.. (off the top of my head, brainbug -nightmare => kristine blond - loveshy)
im lucky i just thot of that one... its not always easy to quickly figure out keys.
thanks again to everyone for their compliments, yea i never get sick of spinning this mix.. heh
if anyone's curious about certain keys for songs, post the titles up and i'll try to help ya out ..
just another example from the same mix of mine... dj hitch hiker - cabal => orion - see me here (beachcomber dub)
they also same key ... makes for nice transition |
