Can anyone enlighten me as to what makes a good snare for trance. I dont mean which hardware or software, but type of sound, processing etc.

My tracks seem to fall flat in this area.

Any advice for would be much appreciated.

the FX you put on them..

Compression, reverb, and EQing (in that order)
Sirocco
a gate after the reverb can make great addition

a good snare starts with a good sample !
which will need some fx (at least in trance)
An exciter is a good alternative for eq-ing

you can also use a locut _before_ compressing the snare. a 2nd soft compression after the reverb gives the snare sound a nice thick "dfffff" (you know what i mean)

Sometimes it can be good to use a phaser effect on long snare roll lines.
