Hey,
You all have probably heard this all before from other peoples, but. I am soon gonna be getting my hands on a pair of technics 1200's. I was wondering whether i should buy the brand new or second hand. If i buy them second hand i will have enough money to buy a new mixer, (although i already got a really one). So if i buy a second hand one, what type of things should i be looking for in it? like faults and stuff like that?
Thanks

go for 2nd. The techs are almost indestructable. I heard some guy at a shop say something like "if you turn it on and it works...it'll work forever".
So I would try out if it spins. Put the pitch to 0 % and look at the strobe to see if it runs smooth.
Maybe you can get some new needles with them. New cardriges aren't necessary.

ohh sweet, but about that strobe thing, i know what it is but i dunno what it does, you look at the platter thing where the red light hits it, but what does the strobe do??
djdawn
when you have the pich at 0% the dots on the platter (there are 4 rows) in the second row from the bottom will not move. They should stay exactly where they are so you can see it runs smoothely.
If you change the pitch to +, they will move to the left, and to the right when changed to -
hope this helps

ohh thanx, got ya, well now i can't wait to get em, but about tha cartridges and stylus's. i have seen two different types, i have seen these long and slender ones, and i have seen these boxy type ones, which one is what, or what is the difference and what is best to buy. Sorry you have another newbie, but i will learn
djdawn
slender ones: Ortofon
Boxy ones: Stanton or other brands...
doesn't really matter. Sound depends more on the stylus. I got the Ortofon Concord Nightclub E and it sounds great and lasted over 2 years. you only need to replace the stylus. So the $ for the cartridge is just a one time investment...

How are the Stanton 680's? The ortofon's or the similar Groovemaster's are quite a bit more money than the 680's.

Just make sure you can see them before you buy em. If they are all scratched up, and look like they have had the kicked outta them, go for something else. Even though the insides are damn sturdy, having a pair of beatin up decks is no good.

ohh ok =) so basically i should be looking at the strobe dots at various speeds to see if it is running ok. Basically any visual defects....there must be something else, aren't these dex like really diverse??

There is nothing wrong with getting used 1200's because you can buy any parts on that machine, ie. strobe light, popoutlight, tonearm, etc. Just check if the platter moves or not, thats all you really have to know..peace
