Hey i have an question

when i run my atuff through soundforge, i usually get clipping msg, but i can't hear any even if i turn it a bit loud.

so my question is this like the clipping box in reason? bugged or something? or is it something i should NOT ignore?

tnx

Clipping is like distortion in the way that you can not hear subtle uses of it, but if you crank up distoration then you will hear it. So with soundforge being based as a mastering tool it will pop up a message like that even if one sample is slightly over 0db. Theres a few ways round this

- lower the level of your samples so it does not go over 0db
- normalise your samples to 0db
- compress your samples to 0db

Whatever you do .. do not ignore it ... as it may well comeback and bite your ass later on :D

i.e. some cd players will make a huge clicking noise if they try to play a sample that is over 0db. Hence mastering engineers like to work with a -0.3db (or even -0.5db) headroom ... just in case ;)

problem is, usually the kick clips but if i lower the volume the kick gets to soft.

clipping as i see it on reason or soundforge, but can't hear it.

drop a compressor on top of it. Max the ratio and set threshold to just under 0db. if it has attack and release settings then set attack to 0-10ms and release to about 100-200ms. you will find that you can make your kick sound even louder than what it really is with this method all you need to do is crank up the input gain :D
