Jian Gomeshi did a piece about this, and I think now is the right time to bring it up.
Anyone deliberately not voting because it is a waste of time, doesn't really change anything, their just a bunch of pigs anyway?
Not me. I'm voting; but then I'm an eternal optimist. |

| Voting? Pfft... none of the candidates are not worthy my vote, so therefore, none of them are getting it. |

| I watched that show even though I can't stand that Gomeshi guy. I've never voted before. I couldn't care less... but that was before. Now, I'm tired of all this BS and I want my vote to make a difference. I don't plan on screwing the vote this time around. |

I wonder if in the absence of electoral reform in terms of proportional representation for the parties based on popular vote (a la what the NDP has been advocating, which I don't see realistically happening any time soon), if there would be support for moving to a preferential ballot.
Complexities of filling such a ballot out aside for the typical voter (i.e. ranking their choices from 1 to whatever as opposed to simply marking an X), at least this way, the representative elected in each riding would have 50%+1 support as opposed to the existing system where someone could theoretically be elected with only 1/3 of voters supporting them (or in the case of a riding with 4 strong candidates, being elected with even just 25%+1). |

The argument against proportional representation is that party politics would be more prevalent, as there would be MPs who would be elected without any direct ties to their ridings.
This is the first time I have seen such a ranking system proposed for federal politics. |

at least vote for somebody...
I know someone who went to university in NS...in a provincial (I think) election, their riding's seat was won by something retarded like 10-20 votes...and in the province it was ONE seat that determined whether or not there was a minority or majority gov't.
I bet the people in that riding who decided not to vote because their vote "doesn't make a difference" felt pretty damn stupid after that election! |

I'm sure those in Jack Leyton or Olivia Chow's riding would have a lot to say about that.
