SuperSaw like a chorus?

We are hard-working to achieve the true supersaw sound and this is what someone reputated like Paul Ward thinks about the roland jp-8000:
quote: | 'Super Saw' ostensibly amounts to the effect of seven sawtooth waveforms being played in unison. The control sliders allow you to vary the level of the six extra oscillators against the original and also to detune them for subtle -- or not so subtle -- thickening effects. Of all the waveforms on offer I was most disappointed with this one. Perhaps I had expected too much of it, but I couldn't quite get my brain to accept that I was listening to seven oscillators. Put three real analogue waveforms together and the result can be powerfully rich. The JP8000's Super Saw sounds like the kind of thing you'd achieve with a good chorus processor -- not bad, but just not as dramatic as you might expect. |
->here you can find the article
I haven't had the opportunity to get a jp-8xxx at hand but I can hardly believe that assertion. What do you think about? |

its boring. i bought one thinking that it would be the resolution to my trancey problems but it really wasnt. it gave me some cool sounds for about 3 tracks (cool sounds being sounds that ive heard before) then I didnt have much more use for it. It sounds fabulous, but its the most limited synth ive ever owned and ive had alot. I sold it later for a virus b. I intend on getting one again for a few of the sounds that i got on it, but if you're looking for something that you can dive into, you're ed with a JP. its the most straightforward basic synthesizer--apart from the feedback osc which is interesting but sounds like anyways. I made a few 303 sounds with feedback osc that were kinda neat...but no where near as impressive as my nova.
Supersaw? yeah dude it sounds amazing. Lol this gimp doesnt know what he's talking about- it sounds like 7 oscillators playing deffo. the thing with supersaw is that its pre-eqed...in a good way. Yeah, you can get 3 oscillators fatter, but the supersaw just has a "cutting" quality to it. I love it- its really why i want to buy it again. But, there are catches. The supersaw is exactly what it is. Digital samples of multiple oscillators---theres NOTHING more you can do to it hehe. Once you press supersaw and adjust the detune (and mix but that doesnt do a whole lotta good for you) you're done with your sound---pretty much at least. Yeah there are a few variations that you can do with the second oscillator, but not a whole lot. Thats why you get bored.
Also there are alot of really cheaply made features on the unit. Like the typical TY midi roland had to cheap out on. The lack of voices and parts is annoying, especially for a VA that competes with like the virus, nova, nord leads, and waldorfs which just abolish the JP in one swipe as far as features and interesting sounds go. Also the filters suck majorly. They sound horrible, whenever i get one again, im going to hook it up to an analog filter box. The resonance sounds nasty and wispy and way too much like diahrea. They sounds way too cheap for my tastes.
If you want a JP..id say have a nice little foundation of synths before you add one to your arsenal. But I'd NEVER have it as a workhorse..even if i re-recorded sounds from it. The sounds just arent that interesting  But dont get me wrong, its still cool to throw in every once in a while, for those sounds that you've already heard before :) |

Don't forget it's now more than 7 years old. The chips were not as powerfull as these today. My an1x also has "just" 10 voices and it's from the same year so it's up with the competition back then. About the filters I didn't play a jp but if they sound even a little like the mc 505 filter, then I know what you mean. It also sounds horrible and digital in the worst meaning of the word. my waldorf q, an1x or even the rm1x (it's competitor) has much phatter filters. |

I love my 8080 but I can see what he's saying about it being kinda limited and not as impressive as it could be. I've made strings that rival those of Darren Tate but they just don't sound as impressive as what I'd like. I'm thinking of getting a Waldorf Q...that thing can make some SWEET strings and leads.
There's also a VST with a pretty mean supersaw that rivals the 8080. It's called the Superwave....you can download it for free here:

If you wanna see kinda what the 8080 sounds like use that for a while...the knobs and envelopes are somewhat similiar.
Cheers. |

I love my 8080 i wouldnt sell it for anything. Its not an out of box trancer, it takes some patching skills to get that but spend some quality time with it and you wont be disapointed. If your not willing to put some time into patching it then dont bother.
