21 Gun salute?

Why does the 21 gun salute have 21 gun shots? why not a 20 gun sulute or a 22 gun salute?
Just a discussion me and my mate were having during a long road trip. |

the US navy still uses the 21 gun salute rendered from 21 single, seperate weapons. the US marines and ground forces use 7 weapons each firing 3 shots a piece. i don't know why it is 7, i think it has to do with superstition about odd numbers from back in the day. the US navy first made a regulation in the early 1800's for rendering gun salutes which required that when the president visits a ship of the US navy, he is saluted with 21 guns... 21 was the number of states in the union at that time.

In 1842, the Presidential salute was formally established at 21 guns. In 1890, regulations designated the "national salute" as 21 guns and redesignated the traditional Independence Day salute, the "Salute to the Union," equal to the number of states. Today the national salute of 21 guns is fired in honor of a national flag, the sovereign or chief of state of a foreign nation, a member of a reigning royal family, and the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States. It is also fired at noon of the day of the funeral of a President, ex-President, or President-elect. |
