Thinking of getting a Virus C...

Hello all :)
I'm looking for some advice about getting a Virus C, I've had my heart set on one for aaaages and finally I can just about afford it. But, I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to hardware so I have a few (probably basic) questions...
Frankly, I haven't a clue how I'd connect a Virus to my PC and what all the various connections and leads are for. I have a (pretty old) MIDI keyboard which I've connected straight to my soundcard via midi-leads and the GamePort but that's about as advanced as it gets!
I'm looking at replacing my current consumer-card with an Emu 1820. I would go for the 1212M but I'm in the unfortunate position of needing support for headphones, which I'm told the 1212M doesn't support. I'm sure that the 1820 is more than up to the job but I don't know where to go from there. For example, do I need a Midisport hub?
I'm using FLStudio 4 at the moment; I'm sure Cubase is probably better at handling hardware, but I'd rather stick with what I know... unless anyone knows of any good reasons not to use FLS and a Virus together? I'm under the impresson that since FLS can now record audio that the two should work together perfectly?
I appreciate these are pretty broad questions, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

you can connect headphones to the emu1212m

these will do the job. if u need more power you can pick up a heaphone pre amp for cheap.
id personally get the powercore card with the poco virus with the multi dsp license. no need to learn hardware and you get some pretty cool reverb and 16 instances of the virus in vst format. |

I made a thread about this a while back...you can search for my screen name in this forum. You can basically record from any hardware device straight into FL and it automatically puts the audio clips in the playlist and step sequencer. You can also add effects to the channel before and/or after you record.
I have a JP-8080 hooked up through my M-Audio Audiophile soundcard and it works great. Good luck...I'd love to have a Virus C but I think my next purchase is going to be a Waldorf Q.
Cheers. :D |

Don't kid yourself about getting a virus.
Sure, my kC brings out the most incredible sounds ... but only after a long time learning how to effectively program it.
You won't learn to properly program the C in a week, or even a month.
If you buy it, prepare for a long haul before you can use it fully. |

I'm very tempted by the Powercore & Virus TDM. Unfortunately it'd end up costing just under £1400 which is an awful lot... £300 more than the C. I noticed that there is the Powercore Element which costs £300 less, but lacks the MasterX3... is that a major loss?

Ta, I'll look into that.
Edit: Apologies for the lengthy time it takes to reply - I'm having to access the intarweb through my university since my cable at home is down. Yay for NTL... :sadgreen: |

| I looked to specs of the KC and I found that it supports USB. I guess the USB supports midi, but I'm not sure whether recordings can be made with the USB connection. Does anyone have any info about this? |

The virus C is frickin awesome, but I will say it does take some time to program. Probably the best way is to use sounddiver which is a patch editor that comes with the virus. It is much easier to design patches with that.
The powercore is awesome as well, since you get some awesome fx, that don't require any cpu usuage, as well as the ability to use synths like the like virus powercore. You can run multiple instances of the virus on the powercore. I really like having the hardware box with knobs though.
PS, if you need to buy some of this stuff, get a hold of me through email

You can't use the TDM virus with a powercore (unless you have a protools system), you need the Virus Powercore version, which by the way.. is way cheaper.

wrong once again lol I should become your personal assistant.
TC Electronics made a big blunder. When you get your powercore pack, it comes with the 1.7 version cd which contains the master x3. all u have to do is install the 1.7 version on another pc, go into the dll folder, and save the masterx3 dll . install it on your system with your powercore card , with the 1.9 software, put the x3 dll in the folder with the other powercore effects and bingo, x3 free.
also you can register aand email them theyll give it to you for free. this is not confirmed as someone told me this so i dont know how reliable his info is. |

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to go with the Virus C instead of the powercore - I like the idea of running the Virus as a VSTi, but I think I'd prefer to have the actual unit, knobs and all :p
I have two more, pretty newbie, questions if someone doesn't mind lending some assistance. :)
I'm trying to save as much money as possible, and I've been reading that a preamp is pretty much a necessity when using headphones with the 1212M (since the output is line-level). Does anyone know if this is also the case with the Audiophile 2496? I've read good things about the 2496, and it's cheaper than the alternatives (I can always upgrade to an Emu 1820 at a later date if I need the extra input). The problem is, I'm not familiar with the sound outputs on the 2496 - will be be possible (using an adaptor or otherwise) to use headphones with it? Of course, I'd rather be using monitors... all in good time, hopefully. Failing this, does anyone have any recommendations for relatively inexpensive soundcards which would support the virus (and headphones :p) with reasonably low latency?
The second thing is just to check how I'd connect a MIDI keyboard and Virus. Am I correct here? :
Keyboard -> MIDI Cable -> MIDI-in on Soundcard
MIDI-out on Soundcard -> MIDI Cable -> MIDI-in on Virus
Sound Out on Virus -> 1/2" Jack to Jack (times 2) -> Soundcard Input
Thanks for any help, and for putting up with me - I've only ever used software in the past ;) |
