I always thought to myself that this question would sound strange if brought up but here goes:
roughly 2 years ago I was given some albums from a friend.
Chicane - Behind The Sun
Sonic Animation - Orchid For The Afterworld
Royksopp - Melody A.M
now when I first get a new album, instead of just sitting there and experiencing my first listen, I usually play a game to have it as background music.
for example
When I was playing GTA-2 I just happened to be listening to Royksopp. More specifically: "Royksopp - A Higher Place"
the others were:
Quake 1 - Sonic Animation and Quake 2 - Chicane
So anyway, I was playing these games and listening to these awesome choons, but now whenever I hear one of these tunes I cant help but visualize or remember the game that I played when first listening to them.
Whenever I hear Royksopp - A Higher Place I always get this mental picture of the top left corner of the first map on GTA-2 where all the loonies are.
Its not a problem or anything...
I just thought that it would be interesting to find out if this happens to anybody else.
Its interesting how the brain works, no?

| yeah i know what you mean exactly. its damn annoying IMO. i remeber when my dad bought me Tiesto - Revolution i did the same thing and all i can picture now is goddamn unreal tournament. I get inspired when i listin to trance. it takes me somewere else. listing to good uplifting, powerful songs always brings up amazing memories or good thoughts and mental pictures of good momments. i dont want all that crowded up by some dumb game. anybody else know what I mean? |

| Music definetly has that effect on the brain...whatever you're doing when you first hear a song or whatever, most likely you'll relate that event to that song. Awesome how hearing a song you haven't heard in a while can bring back cool memories from when you first heard it. |

I find that this happens even stronger for me when I am stoned and chillin to some tunes (usually live sets).. and I can kinda relive that chilled nite or party nite when i re-listen to that set... or a certain part...
I remember one instance where I was at my buddies place and we knew we were gonna be smokin up and chillin for the nite, so we queued up winamp with a PVD set.. and in this set he drops Marcel Woods - Time is running out. and when I heard the track coming in.. I couldn't contain my emotions.. is was SOOOO strong.. and now when I play that track or hear it, it reminds me of that nite...
The brain is an amazing thing... to bad we only use like 10% or something of it... |

| not just from when i first heard it. its not just the memories, i distinctly remeber and feel the same way i felt at that moment. sometimes it brings back memories i didnt know exsisted. just random parts of my life that i always have to look at and think about for a while and question..was that actully part of my life or just a random creative thought? I was listing to Dave Matthews Band - The Space Between (DJ Tiesto mix) and everytime i hear it makes me imagine sitting on a beach watching the sun come up and the time going in or out. not sure why. i also remeber once i was on a train from toronto to montreal and then to nova scotia and many times i saw the northern lights shining in the sky while i was listing to Xpander. ing amazing. once i got to my hotel room in nova scotia, my family left and i just pumped Xpander yet again and just looked of the deck out across the whole city. good times. |

Sorry, but that's actually an urban myth. We use all our brains, all the time. If that were true, you would be able to stab yourself in the brain without any noticeable effect, or be able remove 90% of your brain and still function as a normal person.
Back on topic, this sort of stuff happens all the time - I find that sound is a very good trigger of memory. Everytime I hear Southern Sun, it reminds me of a project I was doing at work while I was listening to that track non-stop. Also when I was a bit younger I had an Offspring CD playing while I read a book, now whenever I hear tracks from that album it makes me think of that book.... :o |

| I have that with singles and CDs, and for almost any type of activity i do in the background. I think even a few songs are associated with certain homework assignemnts :-(. |

I think its kinda cool by the way......
only problem is I have this other thing where when I first hear an album from an artist that I want to judge I always sort of go by the first song I hear... first song I heard from Hybrid was "True To Form"
:nervous:
so now, basically, even if the next album that i'm gonna buy (wider angle) is better than "morning sci-fi", i'm always gonna remember that first track; -and i'm still gonna remember that first impression :( |

Yep this phenomenon happens to everyone.
Its just like when you smell something or taste something and it jogs your memory or you start thinking about some time when you smelled the same thing.
I'm no doctor, but i bet it has something to do with hearing and memory being in the same area of the brain. |
