Hear me rant -- Regarding Tiesto Saturday night @ Avalon LA

I spent all that time making these points, so I am making its own thread ;p
1. Avalon ing SUCKS. Not the venue, but the crowd. I always rant on Ruby Skye up here for its horrible crowd, but holy Avalon makes RS look really really good. I cannot tell you how many people I heard blatantly say "I've never heard or Tiesto spin before, but I'm here because he's the #1 DJ in the world" while we were outside waiting in line. I think the funniest one is when I heard one person ask a bunch of people, "Where is Tiesto from?" and someone replied, "I think somewhere in Asia." Holy hell!! We even met people who were leaving after being there after Tiesto was only on for about 45 minutes. Their reason for leaving? "That DJ in there is too trancy..." -- WTF?
I won't even go into the crowd control outside. How the hell did I go from being about the 50th person in line to about the 400th. Security did not do one thing about everyone deciding to make the line wider than longer. Luckily once they let people in they were actually going pretty fast so I got inside in about 15 minutes. I just felt jipped about waiting in line for over two hours when there were people who got there at like 11 and got in before I did! I finally to frustrated about it I told this one person who was trying to skip not even try it and that I didn't give a if the people he was joining were his friend. I think if he would have skipped, I would have snapped and jumped him. I was that irritated.
More on Avalon later.
2. I've seen Tiesto countless times, and that was the most horrible set I've ever heard from him. His set up here in SF Friday night BLEW it away. Let me repeat that: His set up here in SF Friday night BLEW his Saturday night's set away. What the hell was that bullcrap he was starting off with? It was hilarious because you could easily tell who in the crowd understood who Tiesto was and who didn't by watching the reactions to the first few tracks he was playing. Those who knew Tiesto were shaking their head with a "WTF" look on their face and everyone else was bobbing around like a bunch of morons on crack.
3. Back to Avalon: The Security at Avalon....that place needs to get itself in gear. The whole main floor smelled like pot at times, I saw 5 groups of people passing around pipes and joints openly all night long. And yet, not one security person came through checking it out. People were so drugged out that they couldn't even stand and were kneeling down in the middle of the dance floor while everyone danced around them....and you could not get them to budge if you needed to get by them.
We saw this one girl straight up pass out in front of the bar in the front of Avalon...we clearly saw a couple security people pass by and the bartenders look at her. What did they do? NOTHING. They acted like nothing was happening and ignored it. Her friends had to pic her up and hold her on her feet because when they would let go she was just falling right back on the floor. After about five minutes she finally kinda snapped out of it and appeared to be doing better.
4. Back to the crowd. I've been out to see DJs hundreds of times in my life, and that was easily the most careless, wreckless crowd when it came to dancing I have ever seen. A good number of people had no regard for the people around them and were just running over them while dancing. I almost fell about five times in the matter of 30 minutes, all by different people. I am not talking about someone just bummping into me as they lose their balance a little (I can deal with that if they say they are sorry or give the "sorry brotha" nod with their head and it's obvious they didn't mean it)...I'm talking about people running over me as they carelessly bounce around and bumping into me so forcefully and I was having to grab onto people to hold myself up. It finally got to the point where I just grabbed this one guy and told him to calm the down or something bad was going to happen. It was kinda funny because right when I grabbed and stopped this dude, 1) This one other girl who was on the other side of his group went up to him and said, "What the do you think you are doing? Have some ing respect for the other people here." ... and all of his friends were just saying they were sorry and stuff.
5. Kazell opening: OK, I love Kazell. But his set completely bored the hell out of me until the last 30 minutes when he basically stopped the music and started it back up. If the headliner was going to be prog house his set would have been good because everyone's mindset would have been prepared for prog house. But he played really mellow, slow prog house until right near the end which I thought was poor. Gianni and Taj up here in SF blow him away as openers for Trance DJs.
6. Back to the crowd, it was HILLLAARRIOUS how many people started screaming Tiesto everytime someone walked on the stage as they were setting up the DJ table...had these people ever even seen a picture of Tiesto before...because I seriously thought some people were thinking one of the people was him...(PS. What a ty DJ booth setup there. I felt bad for Tiesto because the tables were so low since he's so tall )
7. The crowd at Ruby Skye was much much lounder than the crowd at Avalon and Avalon holds more people. I was surprised by this.
8. The sound system at Avalon is really really good, but does need to be tuned. Highs were a little tinny. Mids were awesome though. You could hear everything in UR so well.
9. In the end, I thought the night sucked. I was horribly disappointed with the whole scene there and by the crap Tiesto was playing at the beginning. Especially when it was my GFs first time seeing him live and she has been a huge fan of his for years.
I was severly disappointed by the whole experience and never thought I would ever have a night where I did not enjoy Tiesto when he's been my favorite DJ before most people in the US knew who he was. But it's not mainly his fault. The crowd overshadowed everything. I wasted all that money on a night I was geared up so much for. BOO!!!
I really wish it was possible for me to go last night, but it wasn't. Sounds like two different crowds went.

Ignorance is bliss sometimes and all your bitching probably made your GF's night horrible by itself. If you wouldnt have said one thing she probably would have had a great time. (minus the crowd crap)
He was great in SD and it was packed there- mint tunes and a great set.
What songs did he play that were horrible? |

1. I am the EASIEST person to please when it comes to sets in a club. I got nuts to the stupidest stuff.
2. I never even said one thing to my GF about my thoughts of the crowd and vibe, so shut your trap, yo -- no pun intended. She was having her own ordeal of fending people off from running her over and she actually told me the crowd sucked a lot more than I told her. She was elbowed in the head a few times, had a drink spilled her her, etc...
3. Honestly, I can't actually ID the tracks he played at the beginning. And honestly, when I call them "crap tunes" or whatever, I am just talking in respect to what I would expect from Tiesto. The tunes themselves weren't bad, but they were basically basic melodic track that went no where. The first three or four tracks were this way then he pumped it up bigtime then went back to the basic stuff for a track or two and pumped it up again and stayed there.
Tiesto does this in some sets, but he always takes you on a good journey while doing it and he just about always does it well. The tunes he was playing at the begining didn't really have any journey feel to them. Note that's the only part of the set I really and truly have complaints about. The rest of the set were the types of tracks you'd expect from him.
And just because I said it was the worst set I've heard live from Tiesto does not make it a horrible set. Don't read too much into it.
Anyhow, I clearly said at the end the horridness at the night wasn't truly Tiesto's fault...the bad crowd and lack of true vibe overshadowed everything.
4. And I'll be a bitch if I want to. I spent $70+ for us (not counting the plane ticket plus the hotel costs to travel down there this weekend) to go listen to music for a few hours and if I didn't like it, I have every right to bitch about it if I want to. Bad nights happens, and so does wanting to be bitchy about something. Get over it. If you don't like it, take the high road and ignore it or respond with intelligent gesture. |

Well- you've been around long enough to know the "vibe" in so cal is non existant- it's pathetic actually. Sucks the club was so crowded.
I guess I am just relating it to some times when I used to go out with friends and I would get them all hyped up for someone and we would get there and crowds or sound or something would just get under my skin and the next day just people saying my negativity ruined the night more than any problems there were. So I tend to relax and just roll with the good and the bad when I go out now. Someone steps on my foot- look at him- you dont get a sorry bro just laugh and think to yourself "karma". I almost went up there for that show too. After reading about your time I think I will just avoid Avalon in general for anything. Im glad Tiesto rocked in in SD and didnt have to venture up there. Next time catch the SD show and skip LA. :D

| dave, i mean its like Dave Clarke walked onto the stage at 12:15 last night.... and played for 2 hrs, then tiesto came back and finished. I love techno, but my friends were looking at me funny |

ah well welcome to LA :)
that sucks about the crowd there. Its hard to find a big club here with a good crowd. The Avalon venue is sweet, but its also very popular and thus picks up alot of the "LA cool" clubber riff raff. |

I've been clubbing in SoCal before and actually have not had one bad experience. I have had one humerous experience before, and that was at Monster Massive last year...all ages event. Laughed my ass off the whole night. Had a good time :)
BTW, I've heard a partial lineup to this years MM...and all I'll say is so far it's :eyes: :eyespop: :eyes: :eyespop: Let's just hope it can all be confirmed. It's a hella strong lineup!
Actually, Avalon wasn't so crowded that it was crushing. People were simply just rude. There wa plenty of room to dance, at least in the area we were in (middle, front 1/3rd area), yet dancing was impossible because someone who would be dancing 10 feet away from you one second would run you over the next second.
Whether I ever go to Avalon again or not all depends. I won't go with just me and my GF where we will be bombarded by idiots in the crowd. I would however consider going again if it was as a part of a large group of friends. |

Havnt been to a MM yet- I went to an all ages gig in San Bernadino and i was LOL'ing the whole night too. |

A tip I learned at Together As One...stay near the stage. The music vibe is near the stage. The humor vibe is standing in the middle of the crowd with the groups of people laying all around you getting their light shows on. :p
