Proper way to end a track?

Yea I realize this is a n00bish questino but, on the trance cd's I bought all the tracks run together, so I don't really have any idea the best ways to end them individually. Is it best to just do it naturally and musically or do the "rules" of trance dictate some special sequence or what? It seems to me the tracks end in a different way than what I'm used to from other musical styles.

there's no rules, that's the first thing to learn.
if you want a club mix, finish with some percussion so the dj can do a decent mix with your stuff
Subtle
it doesnt really matter how u end your track really, as long as u end it reasonably..

there is no such thing a "rule of trance". there is a lot of ways to end your track and still make it dj friendly. if i may give you some suggestions, here are some:
1) slowly strip the elements of your track in the last minute of your track - first the lead melody, then the background, hats, until just the kick and the bassline remain, write a drum roll, and when the drumroll ends, just put one kick and a crash. pretty dramatic finish, but very useful for a good dj.
2) the same as 1, but without the final crash
3) strip the elements of your track, but leave the strings or pad part (if you have one, of course) for that last part of the track and leave that string part on just with hi-hats for some 8 bars
4) the same as 3), but play just the melody for the last 8 bars and twiddle the cutoff frequency of the filter.
... or make your own :)

tracks can end abrubtly, or they can end gradually, so that you can sense the end of track is coming in 2 minutes or so .... the track itself dictates the way you end it.

and funny you ask this .... most of the time it is much harder to start a track than to end it :)

DJs.. I end it how I want to

As a DJ, and someone who appreciates it when DJs play my tracks, I'd never even consider making a trance tune that wasn't DJ friendly.

Yeah, let's make trance with a 3/8 time, and 200% shuffling, varying pitch and tempo (from 100 to 160 bpm, in such a way that there's no turntable in the world with so much pitch range), kickdrum at counterrhythm and breaks everywhere.....

....there'll be a legion of djs that will wanna be our friends xDDDD

alanzo, don't forget something: "dj is man's best friend"... sorry I meant "producer's best friend".

If it's a good tune it will be played.

(even if you make trance with a 3/8 time, and 200% shuffling, varying pitch and tempo (from 100 to 160 bpm, in such a way that there's no turntable in the world with so much pitch range), kickdrum at counterrhythm and breaks everywhere.....) :D

i seem to be able to produce reasonably well without them :p

Well, take it from a dj's point of view.

If the track is worth playing, they'll play it.
If the track is worth playing and fits the mood of the set, they'll find a way to fit it in. If they can't, they're just not good enough (yet).

Don't forget music is art. Art has no real defined rules. As long as it sounds good/shows emotion/blablabla, it's good music. People always complain trance sounds so formulaïc, even producers. They make the music, don't they? Be original.

Yes, Dj's and Producers need each other. But they won't shoot each other either when you do something original.

if your looking for a simple club track formula, just do exactly what you would do in the build up but in reverse until your left with just a kick or whatever. Best thing to do, grab your fav few tracks, listen to the endings and see how they do it.
