Help?! Legalities, RIAA, & Artist Reconigition

Hi everyone. I'm a newbie and this is my first post here. Nice to met you all. Computers are my thing, so if anyone needs any help, send a PM my way :toocool:

Here's my question. Despite all of the suing issues with the RIAA and the MPAA, I'd like to be an honorable guy and support our trance artists out there. But I'm really confused of this issue and how to do this. Obvisouly the simple answer is to buy their works. I know that. But finding out who is who, that's something that's proving to be a lot harder than I thought.

Part of the problem with my lack of knowledge probably comes from the fact that I live out in cowboy country, Bismarck ND. I started getting into Techno in 1994. From there it's been an uphill battle trying to find stuff. The closest I could find is maybe album compilations that were imports, and they were few, very few. Or I remember purchasing from Instinct Records (Moby ;) )

Anyway, fast forward to today. The only thing the radio station plays around here is Pop, Rock, Rap, and Country. Heck that's all they play in Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Canada. I'm on a desert island of Boredom!:sadgreen: My only way out is on the internet.

I was first intruduced to trance fom a coworker about 4 years ago. DJ Tiesto, Paul Van Dyke, Sasha, Dilierum, & Paul Oakenfold. So off the P2P to find more stuff :P I've listened to DI.fm for a couple years now too. Believe me, I'm poor (who isn't). I wanted to support my artists, but even finding the stuff was hard, either on Amazon, or Ebay. Then this whole RIAA scare came out, etc, etc, so I did some research and found Rhaposody (listen.com). Well it was ok at first. I found a lot of artists. But when I started looking for trance artists, they were either not available, or most of their good music was not availble. Huh?! Better yet, some of the stuff they did have like Cycane, & Muis Mugiel, and others (sorry for the spelling) They suddenly disappeared. WTF! Even foriegn artisits who I know for a fact are popular, ex. Sophie Ellis Bextor, who is closer to the Pop genere is pracitcally non-exisitant! I decided to check out my firend's iTunes out. Looked exaclty the same as the availablity in Rhapsody. EXACTLY! No Joke.

Ok, so last christmas I wanted to every music store in the mall to purchase a Sophie Ellis Bextor CD. These are big name stores too. "Never heard of her." Ok, no problem, that's expected. Look her up in the catalog, can I get her as an import. "Nope, sorry, I can't really find her." Huh! What's up with that!

More of my assumtions seem to tell me the RIAA only holds the artists that the RIAA has ownership too (or the companys that particicapte with the RIAA, same difference). That's my guess. Recently I have listened to DJ DoBoy. I'm sure you heard of him. So, since I can get his stuff from P2P, becuase that's what he wants, he says to send some money his way, and support the artists. Well, since he provides a tracklist I have something to go on. So I start with a couple artists, can't find them. hmmm. I try some more. Ah, ATB! I find some stuff on him. But the more I research I'm finding that ATB, like Paul Oakenfold, is a DJ too. What I mean by that is he has produced some of his own works, and incorperated some songs from other artists too. As a matter of fact, I find that artists seem to use each other's works.

This is where my confusion comes in . I really don't know who to support? Is ok for me to support DJ Doboy, even though none of the songs are his own? Is this normal, and ok with the trance community? Where do you draw the line?

My wife is in the wedding decorating, and we have talked about doing something bigger. So me, being the computer/techno/trance geek I am, I thought about doing some DJing. Nothing Big name, just some local Bismarck dances for the teens, adults, weddings. Etc. I think I understand that most if not all DJs do the vinyl thing, but I'd rather do the computer thing, writing my own software, therfore using MP3s and/or if possible converting them in OGG format. But then I get back down to the "supporting my artist" issue. And, as far as DJing, do they have to pay a BMUG license (I think it's called. you DJers should know what I'm talking about)?

Maybe I'm a little confused on the whole trace concept and maybe that's key to answering my question. I'm not sure. But that's why I'm here so someone can help me answer this. Thanks.

Welcome to TA! :toothless
Boomer187
watch for ASOT on thursday, its broadcast online so you can tune in. You'll hear some good songs and learn someartists and songs...

there is also obal dj broadcast, usually on sunday night, and some shows on monday. They usually have 2 guests along with 2 hours by markus schulz. you can learn some good tunes and artists there .

try to read the music discussion forum here, sometimes people post productive threads, just ignore the common *this person/songs sucks* replies.

I think thats what ya asked, I was speed reading through your post.

oh, and buy your cds online, its the easiest way with the biggest selection.

Check out the UK forum too, there always seem to be people broadcasting their mixing and tracklists are usually available should you hear something you like.

I don't really understand what you're asking with regards to DJ Doboy. I think you're asking if it's OK to support him if he uses other producers work in his sets. If so then yes, this is perfectly normal for a DJ to do. But most DJ's offering sets for downloads wouldn't usually ask for donations to support them, and it's a bit cheeky of him to so so. It's your choice however, if you feel you want to pay him for his sets then do so, but there are plenty of live sets streamed on the internet with tracklistings. Look at the sites mentioned by Boomer.

Don't forget the amature producers/dj's forums either. Plenty of talant right here on TA.

Also, you can support the music industry in general by simply refusing to buy anything by Sophie Ellis Bextor. If everybody does this she'll eventually just go away. :p

First of all, welcome.

I suggest that you go to the new tracks section of tranceaddict and download as much as you can to hear some great trance music. All tracks and livesets posted on TA are 100% legal as they have been approved by the artist/DJ/record label before being posted on here by Swamper (the admn).

Secondly, as someone has already suggested, go to the amateur section of TA and listen to some tracks and sets that people post up. Keep reading threads, USE THE SEARCH BUTTON (this will save u lots of trouble :p ) and just generally hang around here on TA. You will pick up a lot very fast.

Thirdly, if you have Winamp, go to Internet Radio, search under the genre "trance" and you will find many, many internet radio stations that broadcast trance 24/7. Some off the top of my head include di.fm (as you said), trance airwaves, puredj.com, ETS Global and trancesphere. Also try and listen to Armin Van Buuren's weekly radio show A State Of Trance (ASOT) to hear all the newest tracks and Radio One Essential Mix.

Finally, just thought i would let you know the proper spelling of a couple of artists you mentioned (for future reference ;) )

Paul Van Dyk
Delerium
Chicane (he is awesome! check it out....)
