Controversial Ontario health bill passed
Last Updated Mon, 07 Jun 2004

TORONTO - A controversial bill that will hold Ontario hospitals accountable for the money they spend has been passed by the provincial legislature.

Bill 8, otherwise know as the Commitment to the Future of Medicare Act, allows the government to make agreements with hospitals that spell out spending plans. It also ties funding to goals such as reduced waiting lists and improved patient services.

Health Minister George Smitherman says the legislation will help ensure that the quality of health care improves in Ontario. But many in the health care sector have serious concerns about the bill.

Hospitals say it will give the government too much power over hospital boards and could be used to hold board members liable for costs.

Unions have called it a step toward the privatization of health care.

Thank f-ing god...I would really love to see some of these reports...healthcare STINKS and yet we spend so much F-ing money on it...I would love to see what these bastards are doing with the taxpayers money. I'm surprised there was no law like that before!
Good for the Liberals...

Yeah exactly this makes no sense...and how on earth could this be bad? Now when they will screw up we will actually know instead of being completely unaware where the hell our money is...

I fail to see how this "leads" to privitization. Accountability does not equal privitization.

seriously though...this is yet another slippery slope argument from opponents. I fully support hospitals being accountable for how they spend their money because there is a LOT of waste going on there.

In the city at least, we definitely need some after hours clinics to divert the huge numeber of IDIOTS clogging up emerg rooms when they are not emerg cases.

Jayx1 obviously doesn't understand politics.:D Besides, of course the hospital unions are going to say this...anything that comes their way that they don't like, they'll scream privatisation because it's a word that most Canadians dislike when it comes to healthcare, thus hoping to gain the public's support.

So can someone explain to me something, cause I don't really get it...I mean I just honestly don't know so I'm asking...what's the big deal with privatizing some healthcare? We have private schools...that doesn't seem that bad no?

well, with privatization, we'll have two tiers of healthcare.

ONE, public system that is mediocre, with long waiting times.... but it's free.

TWO, privately owned system that is commercially run with short waiting times... but it will cost you.

IT basically means that upper class Canadians would receive better healthcare than low-middle class Canadians.

I can see why people think it's a good thing... but based on my values and beliefs, I think all Canadians deserve a n excellent public healthcare system ... and it can be done.

Funny, but i dont recall writing that article... just posting it.

I think there are people here who will disagree with me even if i say the world is round just because i said it was (and even if i didnt but they think i did)...

Well I don't know it doesn't sound that bad...I mean I can see why some people may have issues with it but I dunno...

I think this is a GREAT move by the liberals. I voulenteered at a hospital for a year and a half in my town. My girlfriend at the time's mother worked for finances in the hospital. The waste in some of the departments (and consequently hospitals as a whole) is just rediculous.

As far as that privatization conclusion goes, I don't see where they drew that from.
