well, they probably have alot of music theory knowledge, so they know what notes that fits with eachother, playing the keyboard and quantisizing `doesnt hurt either.. it is all about practise and luck

Althought his subject has been discussed to often, it remains interesting IMO...

There are so many ways of creating a melody, sometimes one just POPS in there (in the brain), and then I always jump behind Reason instantly...

Then there are people who play with notes and chord progressions, and when they sound right they place them in another order or something like that..

You can also think of a word or a story or something. This story or word has always a certain atmosphere, and then there's always a few notes ors something you instantly think of. Then you can use those notes or chord progressions..

I always create the rythm first and then i try some chord progressions as 80% of my melodies is layered or uses a 2-toner (i mean like the Gouryella tracks for Example)..

Hope this is a bit useful to ya.. :D:D:D

Cheers now!

word ass hell, the 2 toner is the key to a good melody with chord progression, the most important thing in Trance is the chord progression, now work!

I don't think there's ONE way to making a good tune/melodie.
As you progress you find a way of producing that works for you.
Whenever we work on a track, we have no idea where we are going and do whatever feels right. Sometimes it leads to nothing, and sometimes it leads to amazing stuff.

My most useful piece of advice would be to keep experimenting, keep trying new stuff, this will get you the best results, garuanteed!!

Not exactly sure how the pro's do it, but the way I do it is usually messing around on my Alesis QS 6.1

HA! I had one of those for a good 2 years with the Eurodance Card.. I would sell that thing ASAP and use the $$ to buy a real synth.. that thing is basically just a really high quality casio ;)

Haha, much better than a Casio though. ;-) I don't have that much money to expand anyhow. I'm just a high school student. =p

if you are talking about ferry, i think he lets other people write his melodies

here is the ultimate "how to make really good melodies":

1. get drunk
2. open your musicmaking software
3. push buttons

Play some notes on the keyboard, add a delay, with a slight revurb, overdub that track (but at -3db lower) and you got some good comin from there.

It's all trial an error. i probably have made over 100 melodies in the past year. Not every melody you make is gonna be a classic. Don't think that the big producers just sit down on any given day and come up with excellent stuff. My best melodies usually happen when I least expect it, like the one I produced a few months back that really impressed Mat Silver & Tony Burt and was interested in signing.

Some of my better melodies are due to my incredible knowledge of trance, been listening to trance for the better half of the last decade I have a keen ear for what sounds good.

Also melodies you think that arent great end up being your best ones. i remember posting a few samples on ta.com like my brilliant darkness track and having great feedback from alot of the members on here, when i thought the melody wasn't worth pursuing. Some people have emailed me telling me my melody is insane like the fireball melody that a dj in miami wanted to use on his website.

You gotta listen to alot of trance, i think that will benfit you way more than any theory will ever do. If theory was a sure fire way of making a hit track than every tom dick and harry who reads a few books on theory and takes piano lessons would be a star, but that's far from true. Being a great pianist, isnt the same as being a great producer. now go out and create:)
