Yeah, I've got a copy of it on floppy around here somewhere you can install it from.

I was thinking about writing something.. but I figured I would make an ass of myself.. so I thought I'd just refrain from that idea and have a read.

Uhm

Hello

I am at home, by myself, yet I am wearing an "I'm With Stupid" t-shirt.

Ya....stupid is me...

Seriously guys, you dont think that I gave this thread that heading for nothing do you?

In other words, the baseline part isnt the problem.

The problem is that I am a dumbass and I dont understand what it means by:

"discuss the importance of baseline information"

I've had this problem since primary school.

I cant begin to write/type because I dont know what they want me to say

e.g.

Is it saying: discuss the importance of bandwidth and traffic?
MrSquirrel
The way I see it, they are asking you to elaborate on why it is important in discussing your networking information to have a "baseline" to reference against.

Since the baseline is a known value you will be able to interpret other information as it relates to said baseline.

/me is now wearing the "I'm With a Nerd" t-shirt.

thanks for helping out a dumbass :)

There are strategies for dealing with that problem... the one I find suits me best is that I just start writing in the middle, and leave the conclusion/introduction to the end

Often I throw out the first couple of paragraphs I write, but that's no big deal. The question is vague for a reason, it's to make you think about the larger picture.

By starting in the middle, what I mean is I'd start by describing what a baseline is, then work out from there.

ie,

A baseline is a collection of historical information.

then I'd think of what you'd use that for:

Baseline information is useful for identifying changes, as you can compare current information to your baseline information to see what's different.

then expand the two outwards a bit:

Baseline information is important to diagnosing network performance and issues because it gives you a known point to compare any changes to.

You collect baseline information by measuring your network periodically. When an issue arises, you compare your current network performance to your baseline performance.

a nice example goes a long way:

For instance, if ftp on the network suddenly becomes slow there are many places the problem could be. With baseline information, I could compare the number of collisions on the network before the problem to the number of collisions now. If there were a lot more collisions now I know to start looking in that area. I may check each port on a switch for runts and input/output errors, but find those to be normal compared to the baseline, meaning there's no issue there. I could then check the bandwidth usage on each port and notice that the workstation on port #12 and the server on port #3 are both using a lot of bandwidth. The client with the issue is on port #4, therefore, that client trying to get to the server on port #3 is generating collisions, slowing the performance of the ftp. I could solve this by terminating the job on client #12 that's causing all the bandwidth usage.

then all you need to do is shuffle around what you have above and robert's your mother's brother.

Hope that helped in some small way, and if I see that answer when I mark your assignment I'll kick your ass. :whip:
