quote: | Police in Portugal have reportedly said that England supporters will not be arrested for smoking cannabis in the streets during Euro 2004.
A massive police operation has swung into action as thousands of English fans make their way to Portugal to follow Sven-Goran Eriksson's men.
More than 2,300 banning orders have already been issued in a bid to prevent potential troublemakers from going to the finals and more are expected to be put in place.
And while Portuguese police will be on the lookout for drunken behaviour, they are set to follow the approach used by the Dutch when they policed the English during the last European Championship finals in 2000.
A Portuguese police spokeswoman said: "Everyone knows that everyone here can smoke. The police are doing another kind of job and their priorities are different.
"We won't be hiding behind doors waiting for someone to smoke a joint. We have to use common sense. If people are smoking but not kicking each other, and not making a problem, why on earth would an officer go and ask 'Is that cannabis?'."
Technically, consumption of cannabis is illegal in Portugal but police will not act except in extreme circumstances.
Up to 30,000 are expected to attend England's Group B opener against France in the 65,000-capacity Estadio da Luz on Sunday - tickets are changing hands for as much as 330.
There have been no arrests or misbehaviour reported so far in Portugal. |

England always unfairly get the reputation of being hooligan fans. They're not the only ones, but I hope nothing happens. WC 2002 was a good example set by the English fans...you can call them crazy, but I'd say they are the most loyal and passionate of any nation. |

Unfair my arse :D
I think the general rule is, as long as we don't lose, or win any matches, there wont be any violence. |

Apparently there was violence before the Spain v Russia game with Spaniards causing trouble.
Wonder if UEFA will threaten to kick Spain out? Yeah, right! |

exactly! Remember when the Turkish fans were spitting on the English players as they took the field? That's disgusting....German and Dutch fans have got into it a few times before...but everybody always seems to jump the gun on England. It's that Sepp Blatter...he hates England and personally engineered it so that Germny, not England, got to host WC 2006. |

dude shut up england had like 0 chance to host the world cup (worse than morocco) , it was a battle against south africa and germany , and germany knew how to steal it at the end. |

zero chance? The former UEFA head backed England's bid. They haven't had it in 40 years, but Germany had it in 1974. England ran very good tournaments in 66 and the 96 Euro and have some of the best stadiums in the world. How is that zero chance? It's zero chance because a lot of members in FIFA and UEFA have biases toward them, especially the current head Blatter. It was him who demanded Ferdinand be suspended for 8 months for missing a drug test.
Africa deserves one, and now they have it for 2010. But the next time it comes back to Europe, it better be going to England. |

England had an outside chance of hosting WC 2006 until the trouble in Charleroi during Euro 2000 which put a big black mark against our name, as well as UEFA's warnings to exclude England. After that we had no chance. |

But Euro 96 went extremely well in England...no problems, great stadiums, great attendance, the best security measures in place. They deserve the WC next time it comes back to Europe...who else can take it instead? All the big nations have had it recently.
I haven't seen any reports of hooliganism after the loss to France yet so here's hoping all goes well. It's really the few idiots who ruin it for everyone. |
