Hard drive utility software?

Can anyone recommend any software (free) that will check your hard drive to see if it is okay? I have a feeling I may have a defective hard drive, but am not sure how to tell? I have Win XP Pro.

The only reason I am evening thinking this is:

- I have a partition on my HDD that is 200GB but onyly has say 50GB of data on it, but shows only something like 20GB free? Is there a virtual file on there or something?
- After I formatted once CHKDSK ran forever automatically during bootup for no reason.

Any recommendations are greatly apprecaited.

Well, you can try the online version of SeaTools which is seamless (your HD doesn't have to be from Seagate).
