How beautiful and noble Nancy Reagan has been through this whole week. She has held up a lot better then I have. THe last few days have been so tear jerking. I can't ever recall crying so much in my life. I mean granted I was yay high to a grasshopper when Reagan was in office, but to see my Dad's reaction to his death. And then all the Patriotism, and everytime a patriotic song plays (America the Beautiful, God Bless America, Battle Hymn of the Republic) the tears come. I just have so much pride in being an American, and these songs combined with our finest troops in perfect step carrying our noble ex-president...tears of sadness, and tears of joy, for being able to say, I am an American!

GOD BLESS AMERICA

THANK YOU For EVERYTHING RONALD WILSON REAGAN!

I think she started breaking down at the end. Her children almost had to drag her away from the coffin back in California.

yeah right at the end she let it all out...I cried with her. I know she must have wanted to crawl in that casket and be with her Ronnie. I have so much respect and adoration for her.

A true first lady, wife, and mother.

Amen. Nancy was awesome throughout the whole ordeal. Her work has cemented a strong place for herself and her husband in history.

Nancy held up real good. I noticed there was always alot of cannons blasting and shooting going on everywhere she went.

Indeed, a sad moment. She held herself together throughout the whole ceremony proceedings, which must have been tough on her physically.

Wondering when the European TA's are going to post something obnoxious/offensive towards Americans in this topic...

Yeah I like her.

"Reagan's parents were notoriously remote from their four children. Ron Jr. reportedly had the closest relations with his parents and he remains close with his mother, Nancy Reagan, who as the keeper of the Reagan flame is often called upon to dedicate public sites bearing her husband's name. Reagan says his mother shares his 'distrust of some of these (Bush) people. She gets that they're trouble in all kinds of ways. She doesn't like their religious fervor, their aggression.'

Reagan says his family feels particularly alienated from the Republican Party over its opposition to embryonic stem cell research, which could have significant benefit for Alzheimer patients like his father. 'Now ignorance is one thing, ignorance can be cured. But many of the Republican leaders opposing this research know better, people like (Senate Majority Leader) Bill Frist, who's a doctor, for God's sake. People like him are blocking it to pander to the 20 percent of their base who are mouth-breathers. And that's unconscionable -- there are lives at stake here. Stem cell research can revolutionize medicine, more than anything since antibiotics.'"

Strong Plea From A Strong Lady

LOS ANGELES, May 10, 2004

Nancy Reagan On Stem Cells

(CBS/AP) Looking frail but sounding firm - former first lady Nancy Reagan has sent a strong message to the White House calling for expanded stem cell research.

"There are so many diseases that can be cured or at least helped. We have lost so much time already and I just really can't bear to lose anymore," she said.

At a juvenile diabetes fund-raiser, she spoke of her husband's battle with Alzheimer's, one of many diseases scientists believe cells from discarded embryos may one day cure, reports CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales.

"Ronnie's long journey has finally taken him to a distant place where I can no longer reach him," she said. "Because of this I'm determined to do whatever I can to save other families from this pain."

Mrs. Reagan's stance puts her at odds with President Bush, who has placed strict limits on stem cell research, and the anti abortion rights movement which objects to the use of cells from human embryos.

She was introduced by actor Michael J. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, and was widely applauded by a Hollywood audience that included movie stars and other celebrities.

Mrs. Reagan made her views on stem cell research known more three years ago, becoming one of the first conservative-minded public figures to buck the Bush administration's restrictive funding policy.

Since then, prominent Republicans such as Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch and Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter have also endorsed the research.

Supporters describe stem cells as blank slates created in the first days after conception that scientists might someday be able to manipulate into adult cells that could be used to treat diseases.

But many anti-abortion activists view the work as immoral because they believe life begins at conception, and the research involves destroying days-old human embryos.

The Bush administration has said it has no plans to change its policy, which limits federal funding to stem cell colonies created before August 2001.

Still, growing numbers of federal lawmakers - including several
staunch anti-abortion Republicans and party stalwarts like Senate
Majority Leader Bill Frist, who is also a heart surgeon - are
lobbying Mr. Bush to reconsider his policy. Last month, 206 members of
Congress sent Mr. Bush a letter calling on him to reconsider his stem
cell policy.

Mr. Bush has ordered the National Institutes of Health not to fund
any research on stem cells harvested from embryos after Aug. 9,
2001.

Bush Opposes Using Embryos for Research

By Associated Press

June 9, 2004, 11:58 AM EDT

SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Ronald Reagan's death from complications of Alzheimer's disease has not changed President Bush's stand against using embryos for stem cell research, Laura Bush said Wednesday.

Former first lady Nancy Reagan and others believe the use of stem cells from embryos could lead to cures for such illnesses as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Bush's executive order in August 2001, however, limited federal research funding for stem cell research to 78 embryonic stem cell lines then in existence.

"We need to balance the interest in science with moral issues," Mrs. Bush said on NBC's "Today" show, adding that there's going to be an increasing number of people suffering from the disease as the baby boom population ages.

Stem cells can be taken from days-old human embryos and then grown in a laboratory into lines or colonies. Embryos are destroyed when the cells are extracted, a process opposed by some people who link it to abortion.

In a letter to the president the day before Reagan died, 58 senators asked Bush to relax federal restrictions. The letter said only 19 of those lines are now available to researchers and those available are contaminated with mouse feeder cells, making their use for humans uncertain.

"We have to be really careful between what we want to do for science and what we should do ethically and the stem cell issue is certainly one of those issues that we need to treat very carefully," Mrs. Bush said on "The Early Show" on CBS.

On ABC's "Good Morning America," Mrs. Bush referred to alternatives to "abusing embryos" in research. "There are stem cell embryos ready that people can use for research, but it's a very delicate line," she said.

Mrs. Bush is with the president in Sea Island, Ga., for an economic summit of the eight largest industrial nations.
