What is (synth) rack used for? What can i do with it?

Thanks for answers

19" Rack mounted synth module - doesn't have a keyboard. Used with a midi keyboard or a sequencer. Basically a synth in a box!

Above is true and generally, the rack mount version doesn't have as many dials and buttons as the bigger version. There are of course some exceptions like the jp-8080, waldorf Q. Fine if you work from presets like a lot do, but not so fun if you want to twiddle.

these are called desktops.
In fact if you can find your way thru the matrixes, it's not that much of a pain.. Of course I'd like a desktop better but then again I'm on a tight budget and my space is limited (and allready more then full). It's about where your priority is.. if you want a button per function stick away from it.
