you mean the kind of culture where fans have to pay to get coaches flown out of countries so they're not killed by the fans who actually support the team?

or the kind of culture where fans get trampled when there is a game on because there are nutters at the game with flares and things like that.

Yeah.

Unlike the culture, which fans only bother to sing the national anthem, or if they're bothered "Oi, Oi, Oi."

Unlike the culture that allows mergers of teams, or the re-location of teams(a billion miles away from the original location) while the "fans" do little to stop any of it.

Unlike the culture that allows fans to switch allegiances and jump on another team's bandwagon, when it suits them. Ooooh So loyal & passionate.

thats unfortauntely down to money.. and the fact that soccer is a world game and AFL is kept only within australia, make this the reason for this happening occasionally.. simple fact is, AFL doesnt have the popularity that soccer does outside Australia.

how the f00k can a culture stop this from happening?? there are bound to be soccer fans who only come out of the woodwork and actively support their team when they're doing well... there is nothing that can be done about the people that do that, same goes for some AFL supporters... i dont like it anymore then you do..

Soups, why post in a football thread if you're only here to cause trouble?

Regardless, anyone else besides me going to federation square on monday morning?

im not here to cause trouble..

to be honest i hope greece wins...

and i wish australia was good enough to get into it all.

i think the thing with soccer is though, it brings a different type of atmosphere and crowd responces...

think about it.. 90mins of frustration, to loose in extra time or penalties.. i'd be pissed off too

however its also great (like when your at crown at 5am to watch australia play iran) and your drinking and and a shot just sails over the crossbar and the whole crowd collectively goes

'ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'

thats pretty cool....
tathi
soups, soccer is a religion, AFL is a sport. you can't compare the two :p

actually i was referring to a culture of the entire country being behind their team, where a lot of neighbouring countries can have good natured ribbing over the results. or where you can walk through a park and see a dozen games going. or stop off at a pub anywhere during your travels and walk in, knowing everyone is going to be watching the games.
i'm just a little confused this morning, cos my sister just gave me both england and scotland jerseys for my birthday. with an english father and a scottish mother i can at least play safe in rugby and wear a lions jersey. So I just played it safe and wore the rangers top today :) although that got me a few jibes from the celtic mob.

greece 1 portugal 0, who would have thought. Some punters will be very happy indeed with the odds that were offered on greece at the start of the tournament. I think this shows that the overall standard of european football has increased, with the gap between top and middle teams shrinking as competitive matches at club and international level becomes more common.
now if only oceania would give up and become part of asia, maybe oz could produce these sort of results.
