Euro and World cup in Canada......

Is it about soccer (football)? Or is it about trying to identify yourself as one of the "nationalities" represented by the teams?

Do these bi-yearly soccer fans follow regular league play as religiously?

I find most soccer fans in Toronto to be a curious sort. I never see anyone talking about Machester United, Rangers, Celtic, River Plate, FC Milano, Real Madrid, Boca Jrs etc etc but every 2 years the nationality flags fly from car windows.

You are either very socially isolater or not looking in the right places :p

I'm not English whatsoever and yet I'm a huge England supporter.

To each his own reasons

All im doing is posing a question. I want to hear what others think about the topic.

I think we did have a thread a while back about the upcoming Celtic match- some of us are even going. Graham (being from Ireland) is a big Celtic & Man United supporter, but he usually posts his discussions in the UK forum.

Many of the European league matches are never televised in Canada so people aren't exposed to those games.

I think people just like to be patriotic when their country is playing, whether they know anything about football or not.

Btw, did anyone hear the latest excuse as to why the Italians didn't win their game? Something about their socks being uncomfortable... give me a ing break. If their is one team I want to get spanked out of the entire competition, its them. That would surely quiet every annoyingly outspoken Italian in Toronto.

Does anyone follow the world track and field championships throughout the entire 4 years, or do they turn on the 100m finals every 4 years. It's the same thing , of course the bigger tournaments draw larger audiences.....

and by the way, who the hell is FC Milano?

i'm a celtic supporter too.

but Jayx1, you're right for the reasons that Your Mother stated. soccer just isn't televised here.
SKELETOR
i think it maybe cause not everyone has other people to talk to about soccer.

i always follow the bundesliga but don't know anyone else who is into it.. and about flags.. it would be pointless carying a VFL BOCHUM flag with me cause no one will have a clue what the hell that means, accept maybe some germans. EC and WC are much bigger turnaments that more people are into.. it matters a lot more and a lot more energy goes into it than just the regular soccer league.

Tb.
yah soccer is boring to watch when your country isnt playing

Soccer is awesome...you just don't understand :tongue2

I'm sure if Canada even had a half decent team there would have been more supporters ;)
