Adding in percussion.

Hi, I was wondering if there are some standard "rules" for progressing in percussion? I imagine it's different per genre, so is there something that is kind of standard?

What I mean is this. Say you start out with your kick for 4-8 measures, then add in some HHs for another few measures, then your claps, or your bass or whatever. That type of thing. Generally, does this sound bad? I've made a few examples and it sounds ok, but it all seems to depend on the sound you want. I'd appreciate any tips.

Thanks.

Generally, I bring in the clap/snare first (although I use a different sound than a clap), then the main open hihat, then other percussion.

Yeah, it all depends on how you want the tune to progress, really. If you want to build it slow, start with some hihats, then introduce the elements one by one until you are in full action. Or, you could throw them all in and start with a bang, then taking them all down for a mini-break or something.

As long as it's mixable (and that usually meaning the 16/32/64 bar progression) it should be fine.
