Super Size Me - the Movie

This whole week will be a movie week for me. Tonight the Mrs. and I are babysittin' a good friend's kid and takin' him to the Harry Potter movie. Tomorrow we're seeing "Supersize Me", and on Sat. we're gonna try to see Moore's new film.
But back to topic, I've read a few reviews on this "Super Size Me" movie, which really piqued my interest. Aside of the fact that it'll probably sicken me a little bit, I find the man's premise fairly interesting, though admittedly somewhat exaggerated. If anyone hasn't heard anything about this, a man takes a McDonald's Executive words to task about their food being nutritious, and goes about a 30-day quest to eat McDonald's food every single damn day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He must also agree to be "Super Sized" every time he is asked at the register.
In short, his health turns to , his liver turns to pate, his emotions go out of whack, his doctors are concerned as hell, etc. etc.
Needless to say, I doubt McDonalds or any coorporate executive for a fast food restaurant meant to imply eating there everyday was nutritious, esp. 3x/week. Nevertheless it does give a pretty unpleasant view on the health risks of fast-food.
Found this op-ed piece today. It is a pretty good read, though. Seems that although the Mackie D's execs. here in the US have kept fairly quiet, the Aussies execs. are gettin' their panties all in a bunch:

| Well I guess that eating anything 3 times a day for a month will make you sick. I eat at McDonalds quite often and I think I'm pretty healthy. And I eat a lot. I guess it's because I'm often engaged in sports activities that makes me healthy. I think the biggest problem about people being unhealthy is that they're too lazy to get off their asses and do some exercise or even walk to the damn store. |

ok its a bit more complex than this...
i've seen the movie and the guy says that his goal is not to prove that eating 3 times a day of mcdonalds is bad.
he says that he ate the equivalent of 8 years of mcdonalds in a month just to prove that on a long term, eating mcdonalds is bad for your health.
mind you, he also did what many americans do, which is taking the car everywhere he goes and walking as few steps as he could (he calculated his steps).
Its not a rigourous scientific research, but still gives you a pretty good idea about the dangers of fast food. (he took mcdonalds as an exemple because their the biggest ones, not necessarly the baddest). |

Well, in that case an equivalent of any 8-year long activity squeezed in 30 days is harmful. Take drinking wine for example. It's generally healthy to drink a glass a day. Now, how about drinking half a liter 3 times a day? See the difference? |

I'm not sure that his logic of eating "8 years worth" of fast food in a short period of time can really show the long term effects of fast food. That's like saying if you take 8 years worth of Tylenol in one day, you can see how it would have affected your liver over those eight years of casual use. I think moderation is the story behind this movie, as it shows his lack of any...although I would say that many Americans (well, people in many cultures today) lack any ability to moderate.
Hell, I ate just Big Buford's from Rally's once for a week straight and I got the roaring sh*ts like you wouldn't believe. Although I knew going into things that what I was doing was not healthy and that I would probably have some kind of adverse side-effect.
I'm sure that there are some out there, but I'd hope that the majority of us are not so ignorant as to believe eating fast food with absolutely no physical activity is the way to lead a healthy lifestyle. Moderation. |

I'm really glad to read this, as the hype surrounding the movie here in Denmark, has mostly focused on bashing McDonald's. When I ask whether the guy actually works out or do something else but eating, it is usually ignored by comments as "of course he does", "that's not the point", etc.
If he really live as unhealthy as possible during the 30 days, then I would say that McDonald's just happens to be the scapegoat, and that the title of the movie is rather misleading. |

Exactly. It sounds to me that he'd have had similar results no matter what he was eating. The big culprit isn't fast food, it's the lazy American lifestyle.
The concept of a super size portion isn't the healthiest, as it's generally better to eat 6-8 smaller meals than 2-3 huge ones, but it isn't going to single-handedly cause you any serious health problems. |

guys, you got it wrong, he's not bashing mcdonalds (he even says it in the movie), he's bashing the american way of feeding itself and the laziness its suffering. He chose mcdonalds just because they're the biggest (american's favorite fastfood joint).
he took it to an extreme, granted, you can call it a satire. No one eats mcdonalds (or fastfood) for a month, but do you know many who never eat out? and excercice regulary? |
