Yea but the DJs who use them BOUGHT the cds. They did not DOWNLOAD the songs and did not BURN them (most of them anyway).
BOUGHT!=DOWNLOAD&BURN AFAIK |

first off, i think if you're not sure, you shouldn't invest in decks just yet. i went through the entire doubt yourself and think the things suck because you can't mix routine in the first 2 days at my friend's house. by the 3rd day when i was landing the odd sweet mix, but i saw it as possible with practice, i was hooked.
i don't have my own setup atm, because i'm a poor broke mofo, but i basically already learned to spin by throwing house parties and having my friends bring their decks, watching, and fooling around when no one was here yet.
definitely don't get them for any other reason than "i like to spin". if you do it to be popular, to be famous, to be anything else than just a guy who likes to spin, you'll hate it. either that, or you'll actually learn, but be bored as hell with the things after you see you're going nowhere.
furthermore, i condone the support of the vinyl medium, but guys, let's face it, not everyone has the cash to take trips to the local recordstore for every single track they want. if you're just going to be doing it in your bedroom, and at parties, WITHOUT getting paid, well, i don't see anything wrong with spinning burnt CDs. now, the second you get a single penny, you best start paying for your music, or me and a bunch of TAs will hunt you down and kill you. |

With a lot of the digital stores these days you download the tracks anyway for about £1.50 and then burn them to cd yourself.
If it was illegal downloads then I don't support it but if it's legit, then CD Decks are fine. |

its not so much that people just download the tracks and put them onto a cd for nothing, its when all they ever do is that. damnit, you don't even have to be a DJ who plays them for that to me off.
a lot of people find vinyl actually easier to play as well, i certainly do, although i can apreciate the things that cd decks can do that turntables cant, i just like the bit of spinning plastic and the ticks coming from the carts :p
with regards toi buying equipment, if you are not sure, then certainly dont cash out on an expensive setup like technics/vestax/pioneer stuff (e.g. my current setup has cost me about £2075 inc amp & speakers, thats not the kind of money you throw at something you might not like), go for more of a budget setup. if you dont like it, flog the stuff to anyone who wants it and not have wasted too much money and time. if you do like it, flog your old stuff and invest in some more expensive, harder wearing stuff that you wont have to replace.
just remember, it does take time to be able to actually beatmatch with any degree of accuracy :p |

By the way, i have found that Technics have a very high resale value, even on Ebay.
I have seen second hand decks sell for more than you can buy them brand new!!!! :p :p |

Spinning burnt cd's is ok if you're only DJ'ing in your bedroom...it's lame tho if you start playing parties like that and I don't think many clubs would allow it.
Go for used techs...if you look around on ebay you can find some that are actually less than new lower-quality decks. I got one for $150 and one for $200 and picked up a basic used vestax mixer for $50. Thats $400 for a whole setup (the price of one new tech) and it works well for me at the moment.
You're gonna need a lot of $ for vinyl though...thats where things get expensive:) |

So you consider spinning on CDJ1000's lame?
Why wouldn't clubs allow it? Any decent clubs have them as industry standard anyways. You telling me that they wouldn't allow some who's booked, to play cd's? The last time I seen Ferry Corsten I think he played an entire set using CD's. And he only brought about 20 vinyls with him and a massive stack of cd's. |

i think you made the same mistake that i made when posting in this thread about cds. i think they are talking about playing burnt cds or pirated songs. ive seen other djs play entire sets using cds, like last week when i saw sasha. but im sure they actually own the stuff that they are playing and didnt just d/l the stuff. |

Yeah but i don't think the guy actually mentioned downloading illegal tracks off kazza or wherever. If he did then my mistake but you can download wav files from a lot of legit places now. Anjunadigital even release tracks specifically for download which you burn to cdr yourself. Also, if you buy an album of songs (for example Ferry's new album Right Of Way) and burnt say the track Sublime to CD which isn't released on vinyl yet (if it is going to be that is) then that's ok to do aswell.
Although I d agree if the purpose of use is by downloading illegal tracks and not paying for them then he should get bent! Especially when you've got us vinyl junkies paying nearly £8 a go for a single! |
