Male vs Female producers

Trance is a male dominated scene, i mean there are very few female producers as opposed to the massive amount of male ones.
Females dominate the vocal area.....so any body got any female producers in mind??

I'm all for more female producers, I like seeing girls & women get involved in science and technology, including the music aspect of it.

You're right, I'm finding it hard to think ATM... um...

Rachel Starr? Not just trance, but EDM yes.

DJ Tatana :tongue2 first one that comes to mind for me, other than her I can't think of anyone else haha

Nugen :)

Of Nugen - Braaj & Nugen - Darksides fame. Nugen's original version of Darksides is much more darker than the Thomas Penton Mix...

Yeah, I can't say I'm entirely comfortable with this thing of guys producing the tracks for the girls and then giving them credit for it on the art -- there's enough of a voidish disparity as there is, marketing aside.

Someone asked me this in an email a few weeks ago, and I wrote up a pretty extended response:

It's a really good question, and I don't really have a good answer. You're right that electronica is dominated by males across the board, but the degree varies between genres, and between producers versus DJs. There are countless female vocalists, but they don't actually contribute to the writing or mixing of music, so I'm not counting them.

As the most melodic and emotional genre, it's curious that trance has perhaps the least females involved in production and DJing. The only female producers/DJs I can think of are DJ Tatana from Switzerland, DJ Astrid from The Netherlands, and Sandra Collins from here in the US. Tatana and Astrid aren't well known, but Sandra is popular internationally, and plays at top global events.

Actually, the genres with the most female producers and DJs seem to be the harshest and most gritty (which tend to be the least known to the mainstream). Foremost is definitely Hard House, a tough but goofy-sounding genre, dominated by Lisa Lashes, Anne Savage, and Lisa Pin-Up, all major DJs and producers. It's probably the only genre that has as many top female DJs as male. Techno has Mistress Barbara and Monika Kruse, but the techno scene is larger than Hard House, so it's not as significant. DJ Rap is popular in Drum n' Bass. Lady Dana is very popular with the Hardcore/Gabber crowd around Holland. There seem to be many lesser female artists in those genres, too; I only know the major names because I'm not too familiar with each scene.

I don't know much about house either, but Sister Bliss and Lottie seem to be pretty popular.

Still, given the hundreds of other major producers and DJs out there, women are in a pretty drastic minority across electronica. There were only six in DJ Mag's yearly Top 100 DJ List: Lisa Lashes (26), Anne Savage (48), Mistress Barbara (49), Lady Dana (55), Lisa Pin-up (60), and Lottie (75). There seem to be few that are strictly producers; I can't think of any female producers that don't DJ as well. And there are, of course, more producers than DJs in just about every genre.

The proportions are much closer to normal on the dancefloor, though there are still more men than women. Maybe that's an indicator that few women want to be in the spotlight of DJing because of ingrained cultural norms to be humble and unambitious, but still enjoy the music. Perhaps few women are involved in production because of the mechanical nature of synthesizers and sequencing. Not to say that women are any less able to produce, just that technical tasks have typically been dominated by men in our society. It could just boil down to some run-of-the-mill sexism left over from history.

I don't know any solid answers. But I sure would love it if a woman made it big in production, or if a female DJ broke the top ten.
