OK, here's what it's come down to. What's best for trance/house/ prog/downtempo? Keep in mind I'm a complete noob, and if I\m going to drop 1000 on one of these mixers, and they're all pretty much teh same im price, I want it to be the best for me and for a long time to come.
Tascam X-9
Allen & Heath Xone 062
Rane Empath
Cheers! |

never used the rane, but out of the other two id go for the 62.
the X-9 is just too damn fiddly and the Xone is just too damn nice :D |

| If you're looking for the sheer quality of sound and functional performance, the Allen&Heath mixers are your best bet. |

mix and scratch: Rane Empath
Mix and filters: A&H xone62
BTW, the xone has nice filters and eqs. but no send/returns. |

| what are send/returns? |

if you have an fx unit and a mixer without S&R you can only stick it between master out on the mixer and your amp. hence only affecting the main out signal.
send and return allows you to send each channel from the mixer to the fx unit individually and then the fx affected signal is returned to the mixer.
it basically means you can select which channel you want to put the fx on, and gives a lot more flexibility. |

| right, thanks. but with all the effects the xone62 comes with, will I ever really be needing an external fx processor? |

the 62 doesn't have any effects except the filters |

| thanks for pointing that out. i am an idiot. in that case, maybe it'd make more sense if i could pick up a used empath and put the difference toward and effects processor. wonder if i'll need an effects processor though, if not, im going xone62. |

| You absolutely dont need f/x, especially if your still new to this. I have the Xone:62 and Im gonna learn on that, because from what I hear its not the easiest of mixers to use if your a newb. Than when I feel comfortable, Im gonna upgrade to a 464 or something else like a Urei if the funds are sufficent. |
