Ogg Vorbis vs MP3

Ever heard of Ogg Vorbis? Well, don't worry, you're not the only one.
Ogg Vorbis is an open source freeware audio format that compresses like MP3, but it utilises a much better variable bitrate and overall better sound (even @ 45kbps!!!).
We all know what happens when we take that MP3 compression just a bit too far: All these little artifacts come out and ruins the song, but we can't just have 192kbps MP3's; That'll mean longer download times & more hard drive usage. It's not like this only applies to MP3's but if u can get more for less, why not go for it?
U shouldn't go for it, as I've heard from some people, cos sucvh formats aren't popular, therefore haven't been tested enough and might just be dropped completely if it looses its hold on the public and will make you regret you ever switched to that format.
Well, I think that's just kak. In fact, I've recompressed all my audio to Ogg 96kbps; That would be close to murder on MP3, but on Ogg I get flawless results (well, flawless enough for the ear) as compared to the original CD version.
I've even gone as far as muxing (not mixing: term for layering one stream of data over another, like audio & video) Ogg audio with my DivX movies, which gives me many more megs of video quality for slight audio quality loss @ 45kbps (hardly noticeable and worth it).
However, to do the above, I have to install the DirectShow filters for Ogg (which means I can play Ogg on software like WMP & Winamp w/o a plug-in; Winamp already has a plug-in anyway, but you get the picture) and I have had a single complaint resulting from such an action, although I don't believe there is a connection and have not experienced any problems myself.
If you're still interested in this growing superior format, check out the official site @ http://www.vorbis.com & download the codec (I use dbPoweramp Music Converter to compress my audio with dMC's own implementation of the codec cos it's easier to use). Finally, get yourself Winamp 5 or the DS filters (from http://tobias.everwicked.com/oggds.htm) for other players and compare the quality for yourself. |

as much as i prefer OGG's sound quality to MP3, this is not true anymore, with hard drives expanding sizes and broadband everywhere.
i don't think that OGG is going anywhere neither because of this - in the future audio enthusiasts, dj's and such will rather stick to lossless formats |

i only choose mp3 because its more flexible than ogg
however oggs do have good quality sound at low bitrates. |

OGG isnt a leap forward, its more of the same - just OPEN SOURCE!
until someone comes along and creates a decent format I am not going to wet myself.
Vorbis does something...but until there is something that will be fully embraced like MP3...were ed, or relegated to similarly limp sounding formats| |
