Quick Review: Sasha @ Mezzanine - San Francisco

Below are some impressions I wrote on the Spundae boards...I forgot to post it here.
Butterfly, it was nice meeting you!!!

And onto the impressions...
OK, got there at 11 and the DJ on was tearing it up. I was really feeling him. I thought it was Luke Fair, but someone later told me that "Luke Fair just came on" and it was like an hour later (or felt like it)...and the music did change a bit and wasn't nearly as good....I never really actually looked to see what the opening DJs looked like, so I am not 100% sure if there were two openers before Sasha.
Anyhow, Sasha came on around 1am and I would say for the first 70-90 minutes of his set, it was just "eh," then around 2:15am-2:30am he just turned it up about 100 notches and started ripping the place apart. I was so hot and sweating so much but I couldn't stop enjoying the music and stop dancing, jumping around, etc....and he kept this up all the way until the end when he stop at 4:30am or so. I swear he was gonna stop about 5 times between 3:30am and the time he actually did stop but just never did...it was nice. The last two hours of his set was worth admission alone. It was awesome. He had the whole crowd in his grasp....
The crowd: Holy moly, it was pizzackked. I haven't seen it that packed there since Tiesto last June when they had to kick people out because of fire code overcrowding. I was relieved no fire marshalls showed up because if they did, I'd think they would have forced some people to be moved out of there until the place cleared out a little. Anyhow, it was still rather shoulder-to-shoulder when he stopped...only if Sasha could have kept on playing.
The air: Damn, was it HOOOOOOT. It was raining from the ceilings! Again, something I have not experienced since Tiesto last June. No fans around the DJ booth like I've seen on HUGE nights (eg. Tiesto in October)....it helped the front of the whole dance floor stay cool then.
Poor Founder: Poor ole Founder has a broken foot. That sucks. Get better, dude!
Lighting: OK, I saw a laser come out of nowhere when Sasha first came on, but it didn't seem to stay on for long. What was up with that? I could have just unvoluntarely not noticed it anymore or something after it first came on,though. Mezz needs more lasers!!!!!

I'm not sure who exactly told you that Dave. Me and my friend got there at 10:15 and that same d.j. was spinning all the way til 1. I'm pretty sure it was Luke Fair. I called out his name after his set was over and he did respond to me.
Anyways, it was a pretty cool night. Definitely nice meeting with a couple of TA's. Only wished that we had more from Northern Cali. I thought Luke Fair spun a pretty good opening set and I found the setup of the club to be good, although lacking in visuals. I unfortunately made the mistake of drinking too much too early, because then all I wanted to do was just chill and lean against the wall rather than get on the dance floor and get crazy. But regardless, I made my way up to the front minutes before Sasha got behind the decks. By then the entire club was too friggin' packed with bodies. It still couldn't compare to how it was when Oakey spun at the 1015's main room this past May, but the heat made the club quite fatiguing. Like what Dave said, the first 90 minutes or so of Sasha's set was just so-so. There was nothing really special about it. Just the type of progressive house and breaks tracks that make you want to nod your head and say, "Well, that's interesting."
Sasha of course, looked drugged up as ever. Even when he first got things going and the entire crowd screamed in joy, he showed no sign that the people there even existed. He pretty much seemed like he was concentrating too hard on his set and being lost in his own little world. That was quite frustrating for me, because although I missed his session at Virgin, I still wanted to get him to sign my copy of Involver. That task proved more difficult than I thought with a DJ who didn't even seem to know where he was. There was this one guy at the front though who kept texting messages on his Nokia and holding the phone up to Sasha's face to read it. Sasha didn't seemed too happy with it. I then asked the guy what he was writing and he said essentially that he was giving Sasha crap for not showing up to a gig he was at 4 weeks ago. Yeah, real smart there guy. :rolleyes: He kept doing that until finally Sasha flipped him off and told him to " off" Come to think of it, it was the most crowd interaction I saw him do that night.
I took off around 2:45 I was just too tired from both the alcohol and the heat. Plus once I finally got Luke Fair to get Sasha to sign my copy of Involver for me, I pretty much got what I wanted and felt like leaving. Really should have stayed sober especially if he really did kick ass after 2:30 But either way, I had a good time. |

it was nice to meet you guys... i got there pretty early since i had nothing better to do after the virgin set (which was killer, btw) sasha signed a poster which is about to get hung on my cube wall here at work... i got a good feel for the space before it filled up. i really liked that place. it reminded me of a combination of places from home that i used to go to. the sound was good on the dance floor but not really in the other places i ended up hanging out for most of the night but oh well. i thought luke fair was good but he sounded like any other dj to me. that might just be me being jaded though. he was definitely kinda hot. i remember that clearly. i was really excited when sasha came on - and pleasantly shocked that it was so early. but as dave said, the beginning of his set wasnt great. it was kind of boring. and also sounded like any other dj. i even recognized tracks that i have heard other people play which is not something i would usually expect from sasha. i had to take a cig break at like 2 or something to regroup to see if i could get back into his set. i came back in and i found it much better. and that upstairs space was cool and spacious enough to dance. but by then i was having trouble keeping my eyes open so i went home at 3:30ish. it was a shame cause i was starting to really feel sasha's set.
in all i had a fun time. i dont go out much anymore and it was nice to be in that environment again. it was also really pleasant that the people i met werent on mad drugs like at home and could carry on a conversation. it was really nice to meet zharen (forgot your real name already), dave, and thomas (forgot your sn). if i venture out again hopefully i will see you. |

Sasha was really interacting with the crowd during the last hour of his set...from about 3:30 - 4:40 when he ending. He was looking up, clapping, pointing, smiling, etc....seemed to really enjoy the last hour.

maybe that was why the music was better at that time. |

What, it takes Sasha a full two hours before he realizes where the he is and starts to acknowledge the crowed? Bah. :rolleyes:
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it seemed like Sasha was having a problem with one of the front speakers in the DJ booth. Kept looking confused and talking to what appeared to be one of the managers at the club. Probably more reason why he wasn't feeling the vibe yet.

I've seen some pics of something in the DJ booth messing with knobs and talking with Sasha. That was Jonathon Ojeda...he's with Spundae.
I think Sasha was feeling the vibe once he finally got a cigarette...
Speaking of that, that man has my zippo lighter!! I gave it to someone in the booth area I knew and he gave it to Sasha...then Sasha put it in his pocket I think. D
Oh well, I got two new free zippo lighters that night. I love those peeps who go around and get your info so they can mail you stuff! Haha. |
