age old arguement.. but at somepoint you have to admit some correlation between popularity and quality |

I respect skills...but if a DJ is technically brilliant, yet puts me to sleep at a club...what good is that? They can stick to producing good stuff *cough*deepdish*cough*
|
nobody said deepdish is teh best...
i found myself yawning during their set here...
compare tiesto to ....oh i dunno...lets pick 3 names...ummmm...Sasha and mayeb newcomers like zabiela and holden....
the amount of creativity just by the layering these djs do is undescribable....while on the other hand u have tiesto who well...just crossfades |

I dont think you were the only one. When the Kool Haus cleared out from Mark pounding on us after a briliant typical pvd set.....then from 140 to 125 deep dish.........BOooooooooooooooooooo....... I remember they wernt even using the soundsystem properly.....Quiet and boring....One of the few times ive left guvy before getting kicked out.
Im not bashing on deep dish.... u just cant drop like that. |

well its not the magazine that considers the djs. When you vote, you are given 5 spots to enter names, so its totally up to the voter.
Hip-hop djs are considered just because some people will vote; but i think the DJ Mag readers are mostly EDM fans, and there fore vote for electronic music.
Bottom line, technical skills do not get you to the top. The list simply states who got the most votes. You just vote for your fav, its simple.
Me, i have an all time fav DJ, but i look at it from year to year, to see who i say has done the best job over the last year, and vote for them. |

he said it perfectly... people will vote for who they like, not necessarily who is "best"... its an indication of fan support IMO, thats all... and Tiesto definately has the biggest fan base.. however, fan base like that does not come by being ... at some point, all u tiesto haters gotta admit he's not a bad dj... take into account not waht he's doin right now, but what he used to be like, and what he has done (sets & productions)... and im not saying thats what voting should be based on, but its definately has played a big role in creating this fan base...
i personally wont vote for him this year... i mean, he's still my fav djs, but other djs are putting on better shows, and he's not the same (referring to this years set @ guv) dj that amazed me a while ago.. so hopefully a set down in these "ranking" might spark somethin outta him... if it took into account productions (its a "dj" rank) id probably still vote for him, just because i think he's still a wikked producer. And people probably vote based on productions as well, not jsut sets...
and some people complain he's too mainsream/sold out LOL... so what.. i think most djs would love to be in his spot... its all about the $$$ and fame... ive read lots of dj interviews and a lot say they want to hold that #1 spot |

It's a popularity contest and everyone knows that...therefore there's no point in bringing this argument up once again.
It all has to do with taste and what people like. There are no standards as to how to judge one better than the other. There are no performance marks, there are no special scoring cards. It's like comparing an Audi, a BMW, and a Mercedes...so which one is the best in the world??? The answer is...they are all great but it's up to people's taste to decide. Same with the DJs -- knowing how to market and brand yourself is a huge issue as well - hence Tiesto is #1 and PVD is close behind...same with Armin, and now Ferry Corsten...IMO these guys have got the "business" issues down packed.
Look at Oakenfold...maybe he's not as popular as he once was but he's still hanging around there and he still definitely brings the crowds -- same thing. branding and marketing - he sucks as a DJ - mainly cause he looks like he's sick of it and just bored behind the decks - puts no effort into it at all unless occasionaly it's some festival he just happened to play good at. |

| Danny Tenaglia never planned out to take over the world IMO - he's just happy where he is... |

But honestly, as a performer/DJ whatever, his sets are immense. I don't think there's a DJ in the world who can stop the music and come out into the crowd and say hi during a set. I think he brings DJing to a level far beyond technical skills and track selection. Before the Boa event I was a little skeptical (as I'd never seen one of his live sets), but afterwards I definitely understood what he was all about. And kudos to him for doing what he wants to do. I honestly think once you've seen him play there's no going back.
Note: I made fun of some of my NYC buddies who got dazed expressions on their faces whenever someone mentioned friday nights @ vinyl. I now understand :)
But back on topic, ummm.... #1 DJ is literally a popularity contest. There's no panel of judges who look at your technical performances etc... |

sorry man, deep dish has nothing to do with that... its the stupid organizers, they should plan their lineups more than just put one name after the other. |
