I have a question about some things related to trance that i'm not quite sure what they mean. hope you'll be able to help me understand:
what's the difference between beat and bassline?they both refere to the bass...
what's the difference between synth and strings?
what are pads?keys?lead?drumroll?phat bassline?sold bassline?layed down bassline ?synth layer?
breakdown is the silent part right?when there is no bass
build up is between the breakdown and the main part of the tune(when the melody and bass are combined) right?

this would be much easier with samples but let's see if they can be explained..

there are two definitions of the word "bass". one of them means the lowest frequencies of sound, being the opposite of "treble" which is the higher freqs. the other means an instrument. in all dance music, that instrument is used, or emulated by synth instruments, and it's usually refered inside of a track as a "bassline".
the "beat" is a pretty abstract name but it usually refers to the addition of kick+bassline+percussions. now you may ask what's a kick? a kick is that thumping low sound that is repeated

strings are usually very looong notes, sound analog and soft, like real life instruments. "synth" is an instrument that can reproduce many types of sounds, including pads, bassline, etc, but usually people call "synths" to the instrument that is playing the melodies.

"pads" are very close to strings, but can be a bit shorter and sound more artificial and electronic than strings. "lead" is usually the big melody in a track, the most important element in an uplifting trance track. "keys".. ehh.. that's very abstract and i don't think i can define it to you. "drumroll" is when you have a percussion sound, usually a snare, that gets repeated faster and faster until its released
about the basslines i dunno really, those are just names people make up to describe them. a "synth layer" is just a synth instrument playing a typical synth sound.

it's the silent part yeah, when there is no kick. the bassline can be there.

buildup is the part when the track goes building from a breakdown, adding instruments and usually drumrolls until it "blows up" with the main part
i might have said something stupid in all this so someone could correct me if i'm wrong.. |

strange...i thought kicks are the high sounds that are with the base that sound a bit like the plates on a drum system
and the first and last one and a half minutes of a track(when everything sounds the same and there's only the beat)are called intro and outro right? |

to be honest with yah, just download fruity loops(latest version) and play with it...you'll know it all in a matter of time - prolly a few hours...but this thread is not gonna provide any concrete info without samples....wish you the best of luck...
and kick = bass BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM
although kick could have different pitches: sounding rich and deep, low and loud, high and short- basically all different types that exist...and with a little manipulation of the sample, you could create a different kick which you could coin as your signature sound... |
