this is a post I put in the chicago forum but I thouight I might open up this discussion to everyone .
----------------------------------------------
an interesting story I'd like to share concerning this.....
A few months back I was speaking to the club owners of so#$@ b#$, d$ma#e, and tr#$# n@##club in chicago ( all seperatly of course). I was speaking to them because I was hoping to get a gig their playing my music. All the owners said they loved my sets but thought my style of music on the cd's ( prog. /euro trance, and prog house) would not fly in thier clubs or in the city in general. They both went on to tell me that the majoirty of clubs in the city try to cator to the suburban kids that come into the city on the weekends. They try to play music that they beleive these people will like , such as hip hop and fimilar house music and of course old 80 and 90 fav's. They the owners told me that their primary concern is about getting $$$ form bar sales and not trying to change the music scene or exposing people to new music. They went on to tell me that in thier expereince successful club build an image and work that image to their favor.Usually this image is created by hype, location, people going to the club, etc. Rarely , in thier opinion does a club create an image around the muisc they play. Without going on forever w/ this tread they basically told me that Chicago is not the place for me as a dj to play music. They suggest I go to NYC, Miami, or CA.They explained how the midwest or chicago specifically is not the place where people and clubs focus on music or care for the music. So as you can imagine I was left feeling pretty ty but thought there was hope for maybe someone like myself or someone elso to change this "club culture" by opening up a differnt type of club
Interested to hear what you other TA might think from these comments |

yea bro, thats pretty much how it is over here in san diego, california...its really all about the money and hyping the club in order to make more money....n sucks if you ask me, i dont believe all clubs are like this though, you will find a few here and there that are dedicated to bringing good music, but then again they arent making the money the other clubs are making

that sucks major ass dude. i'm really sorry to hear that. maybe you could take a couple of tracks that they like and then the rest of the time spin your set and see how the people react because if the croud likes it and finds out who you are then when your name starts poppin up you are goignt o have fans. and then all of those culbs that told you to f off in a nice way will be blowing up your cellphone trying to get you to be a permint dj at their club

| I know exactly what you mean. I am good friends with a lot of the DJ's here in Chicago and a lot of them are starting to do other things with their careers just because the whole club scene here is changing. One of the DJ's I know said that he lost his whole floor because he was playing new house music and no one wanted to hear it. Everyone went into the hip hop room. I guess this is also why is it hard to get good trance on vinyl here. |

dude I feel you. I mean everytime I go out I want to hear something new or be musically challenged. But it the same cheese ball crap every night. This is my opinion of the midwest and I think american culture on clubs....
the america club culture is about goign out with your frineds to get wasted and meeting other people of the opposite sex to have sex with :tongue3 The philosphoy is who cares about the music. what is important is who is at the club, who goes to this club, and finally is the club new. The whole idea of a club playing good music or the idea of a dj creating a club is not even given a thought by our american culture. also americans need someone or something to follow or latch on to. they can not accpet that in dance music there are alot of one hit wonders and constent change in the music itself.americans dont repspect dance music becuase of this unfimilarity and association of it to just a club scene. The resaon is that in the states we dont have radio stations, MTV playing EDM, big dance events, etc. like others places in the world which encourage EDM.
house music is a feeling and to get the feeling you gotta really listen to the music. house or dance music doesnt create images like rap does i.e. gangsters w/ a bunch of girls in bikinis where white dorky guys can feel cool listen to it. America is also a very racist country so the white people think anything with beats it too ghetto for them becuase it sound to urban or cultuted. thus midwest dorky white people just like rock. America also has no meldoies in it tradition. Unlike german folk music, or italian or dutch classical music these people have an learned ear and taste towards meloedies. this imo expalins there likening for edm. america is also very traditional and as a result they can not let go of rock or rap and learn to listen to house, breaks, trance, etc. this culture along with a the same crap being played on the radio( which I may say in Chicago is all owned by 3 large companies), and t.v. How does one expect change when the people in charge of making these $3 million clubs and buying all outlets of media do not come from musical backgrounds .The sad thing about america is that its become so much about money that the art and the artist have been lost. the owners of these clubs, owners of the radio stations, etc are just money hungry suits whose sole purpose of life is to make a good coin. thank god we have a website like this and outside the traditional route of media we can find web radio stations that do repsect and love the music.
it just gets me so pissed to see all the cool stuff going down in europe with EDM. |
