I am the absolute authority on computer speakers. Period. :)

I've owned seven sets, and heard just about all of the others out there.

For a laptop on a 2.1 setup (two speakers and a subwoofer), you have a ridiculous number of options. Before I get into them, however, you need to know that Sicuro, Logisys, and AOpen make speakers. Do NOT buy them. Underpowered. Weird configurations. Awkward mids and lows.

Now, on to your options...

Logitech Z-340 - My dad has a pair of these on his desktop. Thumping loud when you want them to be. 33W RMS, and it's Logitech, so you know the build quality is excellent. Runs for $35.

Logitech Z-3 - Big brother to the Z-340. The speakers are more powerful, bigger, and the whole set is damn nice looking. 40W RMS, and the sub handles low levels really well. Runs for $73.00

Creative I-Trigue 3300 - Direct competition to the Z-3. 43W RMS, so they're a bit more powerful. Otherwise, they're on the same level as far as sound quality. Runs for $77.00.

Klipsch ProMedia GMX - Warning: These are NOT the old-school 2.1 Klipsh speakers. Only Best Buy seems to carry those these days. They're 200W, badass, but expensive. ($150) The ones I'm listing here are for sale on NewEgg. They're good, but not as good as the old Klipsch 2.1. These will run you $121. Keep in mind that none of these prices include shipping.

My advice to you would be to spend $30 extra and get old school Klipsch 2.1 speakers. You'll repeatedly goo in your pants over them. The sound is incredible.

Unless he has an external sound card on his laptop, which I doubt, they won't run 5.1. Otherwise, I'd reccomend the Z-5300, which I have. Those are badass for the $140 pricetag, but require a 5.1 card to run in 5.1 mode.
