just need some help picking out a system for my car, a protege5. I dont want to spend too much maybe around 700 or so. I need a new head unit and a sub or two plus a box. As far as the box goes, any recommendations? There are alot of choices, but i dont know what sounds best with mostly trance music. A sealed fiberglass box or maybe an open one?? Thanx for the help.

i say get 2 10" subwoofers because the bass is a shaper hit insted of the 12" which have a longer drawn out bass hit.

also you should go to a place where they do nothing but car stereos so that way they can help design your box in a way where you get the most bass for the less space.

and if i was you i would get one amp to one woofer and another amp for just the speakers. and as for the deck , get one where the whole deck comes out not just the face.

DJ JEM, if you're saying that he should "get one where the whole deck comes out not just the face" as in a head unit with integrated screen then he's looking at around at least 1000 dollars, which is a bit over budget! In the UK, stand alone screens that are motorised are at least 600 pounds!

you have 700 dollars so you can split that as follows:

deck: decent pioneer/kenwood/alpine MP3 CD head unit will cost you around 250 pounds = around 375 dollars (thats the exchange rate, but it'll probably cost you around 300)

I'd recommend 2 10" subs, as they will be able to respond quicker due to a smaller area. However, if you do that, you will need an amp with an adequate power output to get the best out of them.

In which case, you can still go with one 12" and one amp for that. My current system is an Alpine SWR-1221 Sub with 300W RMS, 1000W peak. It is more than adequate! Its powered by a Sony Xplod XM-1502 (360W RMS, 720peak)

With your money, you should be able to get a decent sub by alpine/kenwood/pioneer for about 150 dollars, i think, and the rest can be spent on an amp. Make sure the RMS power figures match, otherwise underpowering an amp is not good for the voice coils.

As for a box, for trance, you're a lot better off with a sealed box, as the pressure's involved are better for a fast responsive kick for the fast beat of trance. It will still be able to cope with those occasional deep bass lines as well.
