All you really need is the DivX codec, XviD, and the ogg media decompresseor codec, also the codecs used with quicktime (Mp4, Mov, etc), thats pretty much it.

There is no one codec that does them all, tho XviD can decode DivX, but IMO its not as smooth and efficent.

Also if you watch multilanguage AVI's then you need a subtitle filter and vobsub to spilt those all up nicely.

A good Mpeg2 codec is also usefull.

Sorry, but yea, you need alot!

*EDIT*

DO NOT INSTALL CODEC "PACKS" THEY ARE CRAP AND FILL YOUR COMPUTER WITH USELESS CODECS THAT CAN HINDER OTHER CODECS FROM WORKING RIGHT!!!!

could you link freeware codecs that we need? like the ones you mentioned, and explain how to use?

I like the Nimo Codec Pack.

Occasionaly I find a video that doesn't play right (because I have a different make of the same codec), but other than that everything goes smoothly.
