Nervous, but this is the only way I'll learn, I guess. This is my first song...or at least part of one. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions, but don't be too harsh cuz I've only been producing for like two weeks or so.

Reminds of my first tunes I did on Acid DJ back in the day. which is only like 5 years for me.. hehe
That first snare roll overpowers everything
But I guess before all that you should start by doing this:
Take a day off, get all you favorite trance tunes and listen to each one. For each song write down the structure of the song and exactly what happens. Use whatever system works, but the point here is to really notice the structure and how they develop. So for exampl X measures of kick then snare roll to kick Bass drum arp and so on.. Notice what elements are put in and put out for each break down/build-up and how many measures to it, and whatever else... Also then notice how the melodies are built up chard changes etc etc... You can learn a hell of alot by doing this. Also take in notice of each elements volume compared to the rest to... Anyways some good tips and keep at it,, we all sounded like this, and Im just a begginer to so keep it up and dont get Discouraged...

| Ok, I would say to not do what the previous comment suggests. Not because it's a bad comment but only that it promotes only building things around the same structure that's been around forever. While it may be good to learn that eventually some of the most creative stuff comes from the ignorant mind. Also start by learning to make your sounds melt together so they sound good first then work on structure, I see all these songs that have good structure but then the person just has a terrible time trying to make anything sound right. I always liked the approach of going at things a different way than the majority though, I found that some of the best artists didn't do the norm they did what was natural to them until it was the norm. Just a thought though. |

I do agree with you to some extent, but dont you think that its best to learn the tried and tested ways before you can go on to your own. Gives you more of a basis.. Of course Trance isnt really the role model for original structure of song by now.. But yes In some sense I do agree but if you are going for a certain sound (Trance) than I still stick by my way..

I was just under the assumption that Jlaws wanted that trance sound And I still believe thats an effective method to reach it.
But alot of times 'ignorance' can lead to .. But once in a while with hard work you might hit the jackpot.
Ok so heres another method. If you truly want to sound good. Ok I change that, have good structure.(Garlicks right about people with great structure but bad sound.) Do what I said... BUT, do it with all types of music, Blues Classical pop trance, DnB, folk, and especially especially Jazz. (Amazing structure.)

You hit it right on the head. Rather than discouraging creative thinking I would encourage it and then go back and learn the basics but only after you've played around a bit and found somethings that you think might be cool to add to the basics, that's all I'm saying, the basics are good but don't get caught up in just wanting "that trance sound" because you loose what's really important and that's originality. Nobody ever said that's an amazing song because it sounds exactly like.....they only say that's an amazing song I wonder how he came up with that.

good beggining, a bit too much delay in the piano, and needs some- harmony- thats about all i can suggest, also lower the volume of the snares a bit. Like the others said- strive for the top and never stop.

That's exactly my point....music is a creative flow of how one feels, I don't know why everyone feels there are rules to music. There are guidelines but we have held people back by saying there are rules. There really isn't anything there to break. When humans first discovered what music was, it was a creative flow of sounds that, set to pattern sounded good together. We have over analyzed these patterns so much that we have to some extent lost the fact that sometimes natural ability to hear how things go together can't be taught, it should only be guided. That's all I'm saying. Start with what you feel and don't start by being analytical because music isn't supposed to be analytical it's supposed to be emotional and emotions definitly aren't logical or follow rules. Sorry about the rant but that's the way I've felt for a long time.

dont want to write to much, otherwise i would just quote the others in here.
for the first song this is realy ok. you played some simple chords, tried to create a logical buildup and used different instruments.
i think you're talented but just dont know how to deal with the software, go on working and try to use more effect plugins in the future, they increase youre production quality immense when they're used right.
