Compressing basslines and strings?

I never seem to succeed in compressing my basslines and get a result that I like. If I compress them about the same way I compress kicks, it will sound even too tight or what to call it. Is there any general advice for compressing basslines that one could start from and experiment furhter to find that compression needed? And another question, is it common to compress strings?

I do it sometimes. Though usually I use compression only on bass and kick and a little on the lead synth... :)

Compressing strings is more appropriate when the patch itself has wild level fluctuations. This isn't too uncommon. For example, some patches have a filter and resonance sweep that can be very quiet one second and very loud the next.
