This will surely be your most memorable experience(s) while in Alaska.
Two of the most special places on Earth are probably Katmai and Denali.
At Katmai NP, home to the greatest population of Brown Bears in the world, and also fourteen active volcanoes, you can watch the bears catch Salmon in their mouths at Brooks Falls:

You can only reach this park by bush plane, but it's more than worth it to see the bears.
You are also in luck should you choose to go to Katmai at this time, because the peak of the Sockeye Salmon run is in July!!!
This means that there will be numerous bears converging at the falls to catch the Salmon as they swim up the river.
Of course you have to hit Denali NP as well. This will probably be your other best opportunity to see wildlife.
Mt. McKinley peak which the Athabascan people dubbed “Denali,” or “the high one,” is the tallest peak in N. America. The mountain has its own little weather system that keeps the peak concealed ~70% of the time in fog and clouds, so if you get a clear day and see the peak, consider yourself lucky.
At the visitor center, you can also get a backcountry permit and go for a hike.

Alaska also has polar bears, but they mostly live in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge:

They have a shortage of women up there - that's the problem with Alaska.

dude, try and see the Northern Lights!
Is this a good season for it?
I think you have to be north of Fairbanks though.
I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights. :( |
