Do subwoofers do any damage to stuff?

Apparently they do. About a month or so ago I noticed rattling and distortion the moment the sub began thumping and upon close inspection I discovered that it was one of the door of my wall-to-wall closet which rattled and another door just kinda added to the distortion. The sub itself has no distortion whatsoever, even at high decibel levels.

They never rattled until a month ago, which means this has happened over time.

So that makes me wonder........does the deepness of the bass, and all that sound damage computer equipment too? Monitors...hard disks....etc....has anyone experienced something like that?
Nell
of course it can. it just depends how loud etc it is and how fragile the compuiter or whatever is. it been known for the heads on the hard disk drives to jump/bend and render the disk useless.

You should try to keep electronics a bit apart from each other to evenly disperse the radiation.

I've heard of cars being badly damaged over time by loud speakers.

Yes they are quite apart. The only speaker on my computer table is the centre channel satellite speaker....all the other speakers are pretty away...and the sub is atleast 8-9 feet away from my computer table and 10-12 feet away from my closet

If you use it at the same volume my neighbours do, for a few more weeks than they have been, it will eventually damage you a lot :D

hmmm.. I had an external disk drive that I had on the floor near my computer sub. Recently it broke so that it won't spin or do anything when I turn it on. It's useless. I lost alot of stuff on it. You think that could have had something to do with it?

It's a bad idea to put any magnetic media near a speaker....coz they've got big magnets in :D

edit: actually if it's refusing to spin it probably isn't anything to do with that.

That's exactly what the bass is doing to stuff in my bedroom, the closet doors, the bed...

possibly. you can get the data recovered by hardware specialists- at a price though. My Uni had a a important hard disk recovered at the cost of £2000. It depends how valuable the data is to you.

remember you can always sound proof stuff. buy padding for anything necessary.
