Copyrighting music in Canada

Hey guys, long time no see.
I want to learn about copyrighting music in Canada but didn't know who to ask. I've tried looking it up on the web but it takes me to all these sites that really don't tell you anything.
Do I have to go to a laywer? Or are there forms I can get from the net? Also, if I write a song, but a producer does the music for it.. who should the copyright be under? Are these stupid questions :p

As far as I know, its not like patenting something, you dont register it or do any forms. Once you write it, be it a book, a painting, a song, a poem, anything, its your property under the law, and nobody can touch it.
If you are planning on selling your to someone yeah theres contracts and lawers involved. But to just HAVE it you dont need to do . |

I may be able to help you out; there's a guy at work who deals with sound royalties and stuff.
He seems to know quite a bit about the music industry; I'll see what I can find out for yea.

Hey Waxen,
I talked to our guy here today and this is what I found.
In Canada, once you have written the song, it's technically copywritten right there and then.
He suggested that if you're worried about someone 'stealing' your song, then just send yourself a register piece of mail with your song in it. The thought here being that it gets date stamped.
As far as 'registering' your song for royalties that's where SOCAN and CMRRA (an association that collects royalties on mechanics like CD's and stuff) would come in to make sure that the artist does get their money...

The other Trick is to send a copy of the song to youself via registered mail and dont open it. That way you have proof that its yours as of the time your mailing it. ;)
