..:: Paul van Dyk in Central Park ::..
: Reviewed by Christine Allen

Paul van Dyk performing outside in New York City's Central Park had been the buzz for months. Last year he played under perfect weather conditions. It was in the air, this year's performance was not to be missed. Weather forecast, that day, called for light to medium showers until 8pm. But, in New York, we know not to rely on the weather and bought tickets anyway. The ticket said "rain or shine". The big day came and clouds blanketed the sky. By 5pm, all fingers were crossed; it had not started raining.

Friends gathered at my place for a pre-drink and warm up and we all headed off to the park, with umbrellas, just in case. The moment we entered the park, we heard the thunder and felt light rain drops. And at exactly 6pm, when Paul van Dyk appeared, the clouds opened up and released the heaviest downpour imaginable. No umbrella or poncho was a match for the storm.

Despite the rain, and I'm talking sheets and sheets coming down and occasional lightening and thunder, PvD was SO ON! It was a full on thunder storm. Everyone got soaked and didn't give a .

His set was fresh and full of breaks. There were no anthem songs played, a few sunrise numbers and a couple of signature PvD tracks. His set flowed and wasn't mainstream at all. The harder it rained the harder Paul played. PvD was playing in unison with the tempest.

By 9pm the rain was still pouring down, the outdoor venue was packed and dancing fans were drenched, soaked and cheering Paul on. Once people accepted that the rain was going to stay, nobody was going to let it spoil the evening. If you can't beat it, join it, was the attitude. Throw your umbrella down, take you shoes off and dance in the rain until you can't feel it anymore.

I think, for Paul, this was one of his finest New York city moments. You could see the cheek-to-cheek grin on his face. All these people came out to hear him play despite the monsoon like conditions. He kept coming to the side of the stage and handing out napkins.

Even Paul and the DJ booth got wet. Manhattan's top promoter, Mike Bindra (in black poncho), came on stage and held an umbrella over Paul, to keep him and his laptop dry, before the entire stage crew physically moved the DJ booth forward, midway through a song that didn't skip a beat.

In the end, I would've preferred a dry event, but since that was not going to happen, we made it the best night we could. Together, we all stuck it out. I think it ended up being one of the best PvD events ever.

As for the weather, Paul finished his memorable set at 10pm. Ironically, the rain stopped too.

That night, Paul van Dyk posted the following message on his web-site. Thank You Paul.

"New York - Friday 25th of June
Hello, I would like to thank each and everyone of you who attended Central Park Event on Friday evening and made this years event so very special. Heavy rain for 4 hours couldn't stop you - thousands of people kept dancing at Rumsey Play Field and creating an unbelievable vibe and atmosphere that the city has never seen before... New York - YOU ARE AMAZING! Paul van Dyk"
