'Melodic trance is dying' what a loada bullshit!!!! (pg. 2)

When house was first big back in 1985, I'm sure that around 1987 people said the same thing about house that people are saying about trance now. And look, 2001, and house is still going strong!

Well, I don't think that mainstream trance (i.e. melodic, uplifting, epic etc) is dead exactly - nor do I think it will die in the near future - but you'd have to be pretty stubborn to suggest that it isn't in a severe "lull" at the moment.

I mean you cite Sovernir De Chine and Urban Train as classic trance tracks, yet they pale significantly when compared to some of the stuff that was being released in 98/99. That was when the sound was fresh and exciting, when each new release was an adventure waiting to happen, but now the scene's gone stale (in my opinion anyway) and nothing particularly noteworthy has been released in the past 12 months. And, to be honest, I'm not sure that anything particularly brilliant will be released in the near future either, as I think all the main ideas - the ideas that made trance so exciting a couple of years back - have become jaded, overused and cliched.

Now I know I make this point every time one of these threads comes up, but progressive is just the next logical step for those of us who are tired of the state that trance is in at the moment. Progressive is not the enemy of trance - the style certain to lead to its demise - but rather it is the compliment of trance. It gives us a break from the big-synth anthems that are shallow on substance and low on ideas at the moment. If progressive hadn't stepped in and given us all a break, trance would be well and truly dead by now, devoid of any credibility and drowned in a sea of commercialism.

As it stands right now, I love progressive music and I'm bored of regular trance music. If you don't agree with me then fine, don't listen to the things that I do, just don't winge and moan because I no longer share your passion. Does it matter what I, or anyone else who prefers progressive to trance, thinks? If you like trance listen to it, if you don't like it then don't. It's that simple.

Just wanted to let you know that Superstring is from 1994!
I got the original on vinyl (EyeQ)

So that's about the worst record you could pick to prove that melodic is not dying (which it isn't, IMO).

hmm.. I would consider Riva -Stringer neither epic/uplifting.. It sounds more progressive to me.. a very slow constant buildup. It's one of my all time favourite songs but I never thought of it as an epic song. It's slightly melodic but nowhere near as melodic as say Tiesto's urban train. As for an epic song, I dont think anyone would argue with me that "Second Sun - Empire" is an epic song. The buildups are insanely good in that song.

I think the lines between epic/uplifting/melodic/progressive trance are blurring and we're seeing more and more songs that can arguably fit into either category.

disagreed

"DJ Tiesto-Urban train
Riva-Stringer
Cosmic gate-Firewire (not particually epic but def not prog either!)
Cygnus-x-Superstring
Rank 1-Such is life "

Cosmic Gate is definitely not melodic.... and neither is Riva..
UT, kinda, Cygnus X is old.. Rank 1, yes..

but if u want melodic at this time, you aren't lookin in the right places... only a handful of of the main tracks right now seem to be 'melodic'

melodic to me.. is uplifting.. or .. not as bass heavy.. your definition probably differs from mine..
but if u want melodic, this week, the track which defines it..

Cyclone - Salobre (remix)

amazing tune...

Yeah, that's great!!!
Also Alibi - Eternity (Thrillseekers Eternal Mix) would fit in there...there's loads more.

IF Epic Trance dies then Trance will DIE !!! WHAT !!!! Dude u have to start listening to more tunez. U probably starting listening to trance a few years ago right ? Cause Epic Trance if not what Trance was about when it started. Epic trance became popular when Oakie and the other big DJ's started hammering them out in 1998-1999. Don't get me wrong I don't hate Epic trance (but lets face it...there aren't that many quality epic tracks comming out these days). I don't think that Epic trance will die but this isn't 1998 mate...where everything was epic and melodic. Nowadays DJ's/Producers are looking towards blending genre's, hence more tunes with Tech/Trance and House/Trance elements, not to mention Proggie tunez. I think it is time for ppl to stop moaning about why producers aren't making tunez like "1998" or "For an Angel", and start appreciating the diversity that is on offer.

I agree with part of your statement that TRANCE will never Die !!! But it would have if the only thing that DJ's played was Epic/Uplifting stuff all the time...the dance scene in essence is a progressive scene where the music tastes and styles are constantly changing, so don't expect DJ's to maintain the same style over a period of 4-5 years.

CHANGE IS GOOD....And Besides, the good tunez will always be there....They'll just get remixed ! ;)

Hope I haven't pissed anyone off...I love Trance in all it's forms...

BTW !!! DIGGERS IS ONE THE GREATEST DJ's IN THE WORLD !!! SHOW SOME RESPECT !!!!
dj_cuba
well iam not gonna slag off diggers cuz i never properly liostened to any of his sets, but i heard him on the radio at homelands and...well his set kinda sucked...but it could be good cuz the sreaming ppl in the background doesn't exactly help and i always like djs sets better 2nd time round, but don't like him cuz he used to produce and play good trance then he just moved on to boring crap. And he spparently slagged of trance which i read about in another post...he said 'i find a lot of trance very offensive' or some bull like that. I think he is WAY to overated. Why the do u all call dj's like digweed and carl cox 'gods'? WTF there not gods! there dj's who spin boring , i can't see how any of u could go and see ferry, armin, tiesto, scott bond etc... but u would rather go nd get bored to death and see digweed or some other boring uk dj instead, hmm...armin, tiesto, ferry? nah i think ill go and see digweed instead! WTF!
patticus
wtf man, carl cox is untouchable. yes digs is boring to many now, but coxy? mr. techno? not true. dont say what aint true.. dood

Dude, I'm serious. Music is all about melody, no matter how you look at it. If Epic/Uplifting dies, Trance AS WE KNOW IT today will die. The word "Trance" will be used to describe a completely different genre. The way I look at it, though, Epic/Uplifting will never die because it's by definition popular. More people can appreciate or relate to epic/uplifting/melodic than to tribal/tech/breaks/etc. So it'll always be produced.

And by the way, I don't associate Oakie with epic trance

i agree ..COX hes amazing awsome NRG....but totally techno and techhouse which ill make u dance till ur legs drop hhehehe....majority of the trance people on this board arnt very liberal when it comes to music.... there straight epic trance lovers if it doesnt have a melody or upliftingness with synths they cant get into it ......i used to be the same way...but NRG comes in different forms if u cant see them live or have a open ear its hard to really understand what some of us are talking about when we say carl cox is awsome..... CARL is a big reason why i love Tech-house right now...........this is off the subject but last year i went to a club in Germany called the Palazzo ...and Sven Vath was djing that night...hard techno set was amazing ..anyway i was sitting in the lounge and i look next to me and i was like this big gourella looking guy looks familar then i was like damn its carl cox..... he had a HOT chick on his side really HOT as a matter of a fact...so i didnt bother him ...he looked to preoccupied ....
