hey TA

It looks as though I will be moving to the bay area...I will either be working right in soma, or potentially in Palo Alto. When I was in san fran last week I was unable to get a very good feeling for the city but really liked a few neighbourhoods (the haight seemed cool)

I'd just like to ask you guys what you think are the better areas to live...palo alto seemed decent, but i think i'd prefer the city where it's not so boring...heck i'm not even sure what rent in san fran goes for....or are there areas that i should avoid?

Thanks for the advice...

Just avoid the south-to-southeast part of the city...and most of downtown...

The rest of the city is pretty OK to live in...

I live in the inner sunset district right along the golden gate park. A 5 minute bus ride (max) to the Haight.

I live in sunnyvale now and have worked in mountain view/palo alto area for years. #1 dont commute. #2 there are LOTS to do all the time man! Trust me. Lots of bars and small clubs, SF also has a decent rave scene, though its dying out. I guess it all depends on what you want. If you live in the City i hope you dont mind gay people and horrid drivers. I have yet to go to SF and not see a car accident, the only and one and only time i didnt it was because I was the one who got hit. Id recommend living somewhere like mountain view, or sunnyvale, san mateo etc, because theyre very cheap and the commute isnt so bad. Depends on where youre working, living choices etc. 411 please :)

well i'll be working right downtown now..like a block from 1015 lol.. no car of course..just my bike maybe although those hills will kill me.

i'm gonna start looking for places either near the sunset or haight, and i assume there is a tonne of housing close to sfsu...thanks for the advice guys...

the thing i noticed is that there isn't much greenspace in san fran.. i really need to be close to a park, so somewhere just off goldengate park would be cool...roomates maybe? who knows i'll figure it out when i arrive.. end of the month i'll touch down..c ya

check out craigslist. they have pretty good listing for the bay area. i got two places through it.

also, if you do end up working in palo alto, it's not a bad area. since standford is there there is lots of decent food and a mall. plus it is closer to nature. the santa cruz mountains are gorgeous (i used to live over there)

I'm moving to Santa Clara in September. I'll be living there and working in Mountain View.

definately make craigslist.org your main stop! Even the realtors recommend it. It is how we found our house.. ( we are moving at the end of the month) Since you don't have a car.. which is actually not bad since parking is insane, I would hesitate on the richmond area... just buses out there. The bus system is good, as is the subway... MUNI is great, and BART runs through downtown too. Haight, Cole Valley, Sunset, Look up sfmuni, com ( I think that is correct) and see which neoghborhoods are near transit... and stay away from the south/ south east... cow palace, excelsior, bayview. Hope it goes well

I used to live in the Richmond district and the 38 bus line was better than any train line there is. It was like every 3 minutes and it's 24 hours. It was great. I hope to move back to that part of the city.
