Has James Lavelle finally lost the ****ing plot?

I saw James Lavelle (last night, technically sat. morning). It was fun because the idiotic noobs in the crowd kept yelling and cheering.
Lavelled played at least 8 UNKLE tracks (including 4 to start off), his GU026, great hype but 17 of 26 tracks were Lavelle or Meat Katie. Has Lavelle finally lost the ing plot and gone back to playing last year's vinyl and having fun about it. First 4 tracks were the following
DJ Shadow feat. Roots Manuva – GDMFSOB (Unkle Rock Mix)
Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows (Unkle Reconstruction)
Unkle – In A State (Sasha Remix)
Unkle – Reign
Seven Nation Freeland
Smells like Freeland
all in the first hour...then fear (Unkle Mix) and a bunch of others. I'm all for deejays playing their own but their has to be a line that you cross (PvD, Tiesto, Ferry, Armin all known for doing this as well, do you think deejays have lost the ing plot and gone to attention whoring their labels). |

| imo a DJ who is also a producer should pick 1 track of his/her own, and maybe 1 remix of his/her own for each set, regardless of the set length. :) |

Yeah, that's pretty pissweak. You'd think after playing the same tracks over and over again for 12-18 months that he'd be starting to get sick of them by now, but I guess not.
Did you end up getting that interview with him btw? |

I have no problem with this kind of self-promotion if the tunes are choice... but if I've heard the same tunes spun over and over again, my gut instinct would be to be TIRED of hearing that.
So, if you're familiar with the bulk of those Lavelle-as-UNKLE productions, then yeah, I see where you're coming from, totally.
If if say, some DJ rotated in a lot of new unknown, unreleased stuff he did on the fly -- spontaneously and magically fitting into the mix, weaved in and out -- then aye, pleasant surprises.
BTW, Renegade, I like your quote. I've used it myself on occasion until someone informed me it was an Elvis Costello quote, and then I found out it was attributed to both, and other musicians too! Hmmm I wonder who said it first, if someone in fact did? Murky origins . .. |

well, TTA, i understand the difficulties inherent - BUT - everyone isnt a TA and Lavelle likely wants to get his name out in NA no matter what you think of him.
generally he is a bit more experimental, yet I know from my friends that none of them would have bitched about those tracks as they are just learning about them.
AND YES...they would have bitched about normal Lavelle/UNKLE. you need to pander at clubs, it has always happened for any music group| |

| As long as a DJ can still diversify his/her sets, and keep the crowds happy, they should spin whatever they want to spin. |

Yeah, when I put it in my sig I googled it to find out where it came from and, like you say, got a lot of different sources for the quote. However, there was some article I read that seemed pretty sure the quote originated from an interview with Frank Zappa, so that was who I went with. I suppose we'll never know for sure though. |

To give the other side of the argument, must be pretty difficult for a DJ who is also a very well known producer. The crowd (especially if it's one that doesn't have much chance too see him) will all have their favorite tunes they're expecting him to play and to not do so might leave them disappointed.
Personally I dont see the need for a DJ to play their own tracks once everybody else has stopped. |

I rather just hear more variety from deejays, that's all. I mean Lavelle was playing year old tunes (nothing wrong with that) but some of those tunes have been played to death. He is relatively unknown in most parts of North America, that's true but playing the same tracks from GU026 is kinda lame imo. I just wonder at times, if certain deejays have lost the plot, I know it's all about money and pushing your sound but you don't want to alienate your bigger fans either. I'm not saying I have the answer, I'm just sick of the rash commercialization of some artists these days. I'm not saying either, don't go see him, James Lavelle is a true character. Deejaying does not have that many of those anymore. How many other deejays bar say Lenny Dee, would show up looking like Lavelle. |
