9/11 Commission Report Due Thursday

There's a wealth of information that can be discussed and debated on this final report due out in a few days, but the one thing I'd like some opinion on is the issue of creating a new intelligence agency.

I'm personally unsure right now if this is necessary or not. On the one hand, it creates yet another pipeline that intelligence must travel through in order to reach both the President and the Legislative branches. Of course the Pentagon, CIA, FBI, and every other intelligence agency adamantly opposes this new agency primarily because they feel it would step on their toes, so to speak. They feel they can perform their counterterrorist duties just as effectively, if not better.

But can they? It seems to me that the switch of intelligence philosophy from Cold War times to modern terrorist threats has been a little too slow. The 9/11 tragedy is a testimony to that. I dunno.

What say you?

you mean a DIA (domestic inteligence agency)? i agree with you that it is not needed now if ever.

what i think is more likely is a inteligence "Czar". a class A cabinet position that reports directly to the president daily.

gotta go now

Well, and if current intelligence is flawed, who is to say adding another bureau will make things work more smoothly?

As I understand it, many of the intelligence failures can be traced back to the fact that the communication between the CIA and the FBI was poor. Surely, if this can be fixed (i.e. more interaction between the two) then this would be a better alternative to introducing a third agency, which would probably just increase the likelihood of communication failures anyway?

It won't be a complete report. Sandy Berger stole all of the good documents to cover Clinton's ass.

i just thought, didnt the commission see them allready??..

About the agency.. Im skeptical about a third agency.

There should be one that controls all members of the administration and actions of the president, that would watch where they get infos from and such.. afterall, isnt that what prompted Mr.Bush to mess up so bad on the war and the alerts before 9.11 ?
