Major Responsibilities:
* Reports to the Manager, Healthy Environments, Municipal Code Smoking Enforcement Program and is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Municipal Code, Chapter 709, Smoking
* Inspects licensed premises, workplaces and public places for compliance with City of Toronto Municipal Code, Chapter 709, Smoking
* Investigates complaints; conducts surveillance as required and takes appropriate action
* Distributes educational materials and conducts educational seminars as required
* As a Provincial Offences Officer prepares general correspondence; secures related prosecution documentation; issues provincial offence notices, summonses and subpoenas; appears and gives evidence in court
* Responds to telephone, written, email and counter inquiries related to Municipal Code, Chapter 709, Smoking
* Prepares daily work reports outlining existing situation, maintains filing system; provides manual and/or computer daily activity reports
* Conducts special surveys as required
* Recommends and performs joint investigations with enforcement officers
Attends training sessions as required
Key Qualifications:
1. Significant experience in the application and enforcement of municipal by-laws.
2. Experience in investigative work in an enforcement environment as a Provincial Offence Officer, including the issuance of Provincial offences notices, summonses and subpoenas and presenting evidence in court.
3. Certificate in Municipal By-Law Enforcement or Law Enforcement, or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
4. Possession of a valid Class "G" Driver's License and access to a vehicle.
5. Good oral and written communication skills.
6. Demonstrated ability to organize field work; exercise initiative; exercise independent judgement and work with minimal supervision.
7. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good relations with the public and other staff.
8. Ability to read architectural drawings.
9. Experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office.
10. Ability to work shifts, including evenings and weekends.
11. Proficiency in a second language would be considered an asset.
