Should celebrities be political??

With the elections coming up in the US, you’ve probably noticed a lot of celebrities getting involved in the political situation in the US. I personally don’t have a problem with it, as I would like to see the Republicans out of the White House. But is it ethical for these celebrities who have so much influence to come out and voice their opinion????

:tongue3 :tongue3 :tongue3

Hmmmm good question...I think they should...but people should still think for themselves...although I don't have any problems with celeb support

They are entitled to voice their opinion as every other person is. I'm not sure why you're even questioning their right to speak out about their views.

I agree with that point of view where "people should think for themselves" but majority of the population does not really follow politics. Or even know what these parties stand for. So, what happens is, you get, Ben Affleck at a democratic convention, Bruce Willis at a Repblican convention and Bono at a Liberal party convention.

You have to admit, there will be some idiots out there who will just vote for these parties just because the above people support these parties. And its because of these idiots (Not to forget Nader!!!)that Gore lost Florida....

Who cares what gets people to vote as long as they excercise their rights and actually vote. What they want to do with their vote and who they allow to influence them is their business.

So?
You forget that celebrities are just PEOPLE. If people want to base their votes on something OTHER than independent thought and research, that is their call.

What we are forgetting is that these people have a lot of influence on a lot of people. With influence, I mean power to change views,
Most of these celebs have their own agenda or too stupid to have one.

Lets say, most of the celebs are Democrats, and not many out there who are Republicans. So its very uneven.... which brings into question, is the view biased?
So are people voting because they want to vote for the party or is it because it is COOL to do so??

Welcome to reality - some people have more influence than others. C'est la vie.

What you're arguing extends far beyond just expressing political opinions; you're challenging freedom of speech based on celebrity status.

So what would you reather people do just not vote? I would rather people vote because it is cool, or because anyone has created a political interest in them.

If a celebrity is able to bring an issue out into the open that people believe in and were not aware of from the candidates, why shouldn't they be able to use their influence?

Fair, I agree, if you have influence use it for the betterment of society. But influencing a decision that led G W BUSH to come in and go to war with Iraq might have not been something Bruce Willis is proud of now after he endorsed him in the previous election. Or maybe he is, who knows.....

I see nothing wrong with celebrities being political as long as differing viewpoints are given equal time and respect by the media. Unfortunately the latter is often not the case - reporters often fail to apply the same skepticism to multi-millionaire TV/movie personalities like Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart than they do to, for example, Wall-street multi-millionaires like Steve Jobs or Donald Trump.

The real problem is not which celebrities voice their opinions or how they do it, but in how the media covers it. That, I think, needs some serious attention. Other than that, anyone should feel free to speak their minds be they famous or flat broke.
