Tough question...
I could write this big writeup about how I think Toronto is probably more "progressive" oriented based on regular nights/ crowd response and history of clubs in the city... but that would be stupid.
In my opinion Montreal has always been more hardcore in terms of flavour, techno, trance, hard dance, progressive, and house. They seem to do everything in extreme? I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm outta here. haha |

I have to agree with FunKenLouis. Toronto is more into trance when compared to Montréal.
Part of the reason why I think this is so is because I have found that Montréal is a more of a mature party crowd. I use the word "mature" in a sense of having more refined musical tastes <-- does that make sense?; not necessarily that people are older...
To illustrate my point further, let's take Ferry Corsten for example. He called his "Right of Way" album more of a mature sound than the "Out of the Blue" LP. It's still trance, but the sound of the album is much different, heavy on the electro and the "epic" sound is all but gone.
But getting back on topic, Prog and House IMO has a more "mature" sound to it. I guess trance is a lot like punk rock, it's catchy, simple and sounds good. Whereas House and Prog are deeper, darker and dirtier, somewhat like grunge (I'm trying to draw a similarity b/w genres).
But this is only my take on things, I'd be interested to know what everyone else thinks... :D |

Trance is not mature or refined at all. Of course.

That's because his production abilities matured. But then again - trance is not mature or refined at all. |

Hey RJ,
Yeah, I didn't want to outright say trance is "unrefined" and "immature" but I completely agree with you... Don't get me worng, I love it but that's why I used the punk rock analogy.
Usually, any punk song you hear on a movie soundtrack or whatever is upbeat, catchy and enticing... But when you really drill down to see what punk rock really is musically, you'll see that it's really simple stuff (BTW, I play guitar so I'm familiar with the riffs). It's very formulaic and I've heard some people say that trance is the same way, hence the "unrefined" thing.
Someone also mentioned how MTL is more hardcore than TO... I second that :D |
